Treasury of Atreus
In 'Mycenae Agamemnon's capital' by Elizabeth French (who excavated at Mycenae with her father A J B Wace), when discussing the Hellenistic history of the site, she says The treasuries he (Pausanius) mentions must be the tholos tombs several of which remained partially visible. It has been suggested...

Re: Alexander the Great...Good or Bad King, or neither? An Essay
She refers to 328/327 because our years run January to December, whilst Greek calendars generally began in Autumn ( e.g. Macedonian began 1st Dios =1st October aprox - because it was lunar this would shift slightly year to year). The main exceptions were Boeotia, whose calendar began in mid-winter,...

Re: Alexander the Great...Good or Bad King, or neither? An Essay
I think you may have missed my point. Have another read of my last post. 'Heracles' is supposedly born, or is claimed to have been born, at more or less the same time as Roxane's baby Alexander, who died at nine months. Many people would know that a son of Alexander was born at that time. My apolog...

Re: Alexander the Great...Good or Bad King, or neither? An Essay
Sorry, I have just re-read this and realised that you are trying to prove that because Heracles' birth is not recorded in the sources, the mention of the death of the first child of Roxane makes Heracles' parentage dubious. This is surely flawed logic as the death of one child does not disprove the ...

Anyone can sign up for free to jstor.org. You are just limited to reading 3 articles online (you have to place them on your bookshelf to read) at any one time. You then have to remove them from your bookshelf in order to read another article, but you cannot download them without paying for them.

Metz Epitome 70 is supported by a Hebrew Romance manuscript [MS cod heb 2797.10; Bodleian library Oxford], as reported in a thesis by the Canadian Heather Loube. "The King's son, Alexander, died at the age of nine months. On the same day his horse Busifal died. The King wept bitterly and ordered...

Re: League of Corinth and the Amphictyonic League
I really don't know, but it is my understanding that an amphictyonic league was a confederation of cities to protect a temple and its treasures. The Amphictyonic League was concerned with Delphi, but maybe the League of Corinth grew out of it to show a change in leadership, a change in venue and a c...

I'm glad to hear it. Hopefully it will encourage others to participate, and a proper discussion - in the sense of investigating a subject and sharing knowledge - will develop, rather than an argument for the sake of argument, which has to be won at all costs. This forum needs to be a place where peo...

Re: Alexander the Great...Good or Bad King, or neither? An Essay
There were so many strong generals and it was such a large empire, yes, I agree Alexander's sons wouldn't have had much chance whatever their age. But 14 was classed as a man in Macedonia and, for a prince, was only a few years from commanding regiments in the field and gaining respect, so a young ...

Re: Alexander the Great...Good or Bad King, or neither? An Essay
A question: if Heracles was in Pergamon at the time of Alexander's death, why didn't Antigonus or Antipater nab him as a figure head?
Derek, even if Alexander had had a son before he left for Asia, at most he would have been about 14. A moot point, but how long would he have lasted?

Re: Timing of Alexander’s plans for Arabian campaign
Nearchus may have been leaving in June to take advantage of the summer monsoon (June- Sept), when (I think) the prevailing winds blow from the northwest down the Persian Gulf.

Re: Timing of Alexander’s plans for Arabian campaign
I don't think Alexander would have planned on conquering the interior. He would have been concentrating on the west coast of the Persian Gulf with an aim to controlling trade, and opening up the route to India. He'd already done the east coast on the march back from India.

Re: Alexander the Great...Good or Bad King, or neither? An Essay
I was thinking that we know Alexander campaigned in the hills around Tyre during the siege, and once he knew the region was secure, the Persian ladies may well have spent the duration of the siege at Damascus. Darius had left the harem there when he went on to Issus, so there would have been suitabl...
