Re: Chiliarch
Tre,All well and good, but all that is as much supposition as what I was saying. For a start, who was Chiliarch before Heph was appointed to the role? We all know what the 'Grand Vizier' role was in the Persian Empire, but as far as I can tell there wasn't one in Alexander's administration before He...

Re: Chiliarch
Me again...I suppose the other thing that I should note is that am happy with the idea that Heph was not a *bad* diplomat, but was nothing out of the ordinary. I read back through our messages and realised that, one the one hand I had not acknowledged this point of yours (which was naughty); and on ...

Re: Chiliarch
Hi Linda,As you say: "darn being at work" - so I'm prepared to accept that Plutarch says whatever he does. Still, here's me playing devil's advocate... perhaps Heph was "better at dealing with Persians" to the degree that Craterus was *so bad* at dealing with them - after all, Cr...

Re: Again Philotas (continued)
There is no evidence that they were 'close friends' as most fictional (cf. Renault, Manfredi) and some academic texts claim. All the bestMarcus

Re: Again Philotas
A good question. Sometimes Philotas has been portrayed as being one of Alexander's close friends (hence making the 'conspiracy against Philotas' issue seem the more heinous). A good source to check out is Heckel's "The Marshals of Alexander's Empire" where he puts forward a convincing port...

Re: Chiliarch
Well, Linda, we might have to agree to disagree here! The fact that Perdiccas took on the role after Hephaestion's death does not mean that the role was created for Hephaestion to demonstrate to the world how high he stood in Alexander's favour. I agree that there is an implication, but it ain't pro...

Re: Chiliarch
Actually, I think Hephaestion's appointment to chiliarch was for no reason *other* than his strong attachment to Alexander. Hephaestion had been used for some diplomatic missions (such as that to select and appoint the new king for... darn it, I forget where) but all accounts appear to indicate that...

Re: Chiliarch
When you say "relevance within Alexander's schemes" (or whatever it is you say - I can't see the previous message on this forum!) what exactly to do you mean?We do, after all, have a very good idea of the emotional attachment that Alex had with Hephaistion, and he was being promoted to hig...

Re: WELCOME back to the pothos.co.uk forum
I think it's great - I much prefer this forum.I suppose the only issue is that, when I click on the forum, I lose the menu on the left hand side. So, for example, when Sikander said "check out the 'books' section" I actually had to leave IE and come back to the site in order to access the ...

Re: A riddle
That reminds me of the 'theory' (or 'truth', if you ascribe to it) that all the archaeological and geological evidence that disputes the biblical Creation was fabricated by the Devil. If people wish to believe that Alexander didn't exist, that's their prerogative, but if it's true, then someone has ...

Re: Greek speaking town in India
It's to do with Indo-European roots, nothing to do with a modern Bulgarian dialect being spoken in India or Pakistan. Even if the 'Macedonian' that Alexander spoke wasn't exactly 'Greek', it certainly wasn't 'a Bulgarian dialect'. We should not get confused with 'Macedonian' as it relates to the 4th...

Re: Sources
There are two main reasons why we don't have the original sources. First, it was fashionable in the ancient world (as it has been throughout history) to write epitomes and digests of other writers - to show one's literary skills, as much as anything. Hence, for example, we have Justin's epitome of T...
