Athenaeus - Deipnosophists Book II

Athenaeus - Deipnosophists Book I Book II. 42 f. In the dominion of Carthage there is a well in which the water at the top is like oil, but of a darker hue; they skim this off in globules and use it for sheep and cattle. Among other people also occur springs with a similar oiliness, like the one in...

Ancient Greek music

There was a programme on BBC 4 last night about, mainly, ancient Greek music. For anyone with access to BBC iplayer, you may be able to catch it on there, or perhaps it will turn up on PBS America. It was called Discovering the Music of Antiquity. Anyway, a small piece of folder papyrus was found in...

Athenaeus - Deipnosophists Book I

Athenaeus - Deipnosophists Book I Book I. 3 d The rest of your rich men ought to be like that. For to those who do not practise such hospitality one may say, “Why are you so niggardly? ‘Surely thy tents are full of wine; spread a bountiful feast for the elders. It is fitting for thee.*’ ” Such was ...

Re: Netflix’s Alexander..

Can you give me a list of all the movies? I've seen a lot but it seems there are many movies I've missed. Oh Lord, that's a big ask! There haven't been that many movies with a cinematic release that I am aware of. The main ones I know of are Oliver Stone's Alexander, Richard Burton's Alexander the ...

Aelian - Varia Historia #3

Aelian - Varia Historia Book 12.51 The doctor Menecrates became so arrogant that he called himself Zeus. One day he sent Philip of Macedon a letter in the following terms: “Menecrates Zeus greets Philip.” Philip replied: “Philip wishes Menecrates good health. I advise you to take yourself off to th...

Re: All the source material

Hi, Marcus, yes I have restricted access to the two new forums as I didn't want them to be muddled up with random entries, as they are meant to be study aids, so some sort of order and coherence seemed essential. With the alexandersources site, I have been reading these through before posting them, ...

Aelian - Varia Historia #2

Aelian - Varia Historia Book 6.1 When Philip won the battle of Chaeronea he was buoyed up by his achievement, as were all the Macedonians. The Greeks were very frightened of him, and their cities surrendered individually; this was the decision of Thebes, Magara, Corinth, the Achaeans, Elis, Euboea,...

Aelian - Varia Historia #1

Aelian - Varia Historia Book I.25 Alexander son of Philip (if anyone thinks he was the son of Zeus, it makes no difference to me) added the formula of greeting to his letters, they say, only when writing to the Athenian general Phocion. Such was the impression Phocion had made on the Macedonian. Bu...

I have noticed that we haven't had any new users register for 6 months. This might be simply that the site's low activity means that it is not showing up in searches online, but if anyone is having any difficulty with the site, I have set up an email address to contact me. It is pothos@writeme.com

I haven't seen it, but the general opinion seems to be that it is just for mass-consumption rather than the purists.
