Companion Cavalry Strength

Hmmm... I wonder what kind of response that I would get if I were to suggest the possibility that Alexander's Companion Cavalry formation numbered almost 5,000 troopers at Gaugemela. Set up the cross, break out the hammer and nails, but don't crucify me just yet. I can make a good case for it... I w...

Re: 1955 Alexander the Great movie re-visited

Hail Ruthaki,
Yep-the movie certainly was not the caliber of later Hollywood blockbusters. All the same, interesting perhaps.
Many Regards,

Re: 1955 Alexander the Great movie re-visited

And Hail Sikander, I do agree with you. I always liked Frederick March and Claire Bloom, and think their acting (as I perceive acting) was always 1st class. But, yes, the movie itself did fall short in a number of areas-for example in detail of military units. One scene that I found laughable was wh...

Re: 1955 Alexander the Great movie re-visited

Hail and -S-, Great movie from an entertainment point of view-less so from a historical one. Frederick March did a wonderful job as Philip II, I thought. Claire Bloom and of course, the "man with the golden voice" as Burton was known. I think though, that this movis does what all too many ...

Re: Where was Greek honour

Hail Yiannis, It sure seems to me that resentment is personal. It is an emotional response, and I believe that it was driven by the threat (or perceived threat)that the Greeks saw in Alexander's position in their world. Resentment, hate, fear,- I'll wager that, generally speaking, the average Greek ...

Re: Where was Greek honour

Hail and Salute Iskander, It seems to me that what the real subject is, is not honor, but self interest. The Greeks, Persians, Macedonians, Romans (to name just a few) all plotted and schemed against one another in the Classical world, and their leaders are by no means the only ones to do it. Practi...

Re: Top 10 military genius' of all time?

Hail and salute, Okay then-I'll play heheh. My top ten battlefield commanders would be... 1. Hannibal Barca- the only Great Captain to execute a double envelopement on an opponent outnumbering him approximately 2:1. (The only other example that I can think of is Marechal Davout and the Prussians at ...

Re: Top 10 military genius' of all time?

Hail and , I respectfully submit that the "greatest" military commander is unknown to anyone. Military men derive the bulk of their fame from battlefield victories. But the "greatest" military man conquered his opponents without fighting them. He broke up their alliances, sowed d...

Re: Alexander dies at 80?

Hail Maximus, Frankly, I believe that Alexander's empire would have remained intact for approximately a decade or two longer, at most. You see, although Alexander was a great conqueror, he was, first and foremost, a conqueror. Although he had new cities built, he also destroyed quite a few of them (...

Re: granicus

Hello Craig, In my opinion, no one can possibly know for certain just what happened at the Granicus. The events are much too far in the past, and not all the "original" sources agree on what happened. Personally, I feel that any of the postulated scenarios could have occurred, but feel tha...

Alexander the Great vs. Philip II

Hello all,
This is an informal opinion poll. Who, in your opinion, was the better military leader-Alexander III, or his father Philip? Please explain your opinion.
