Re: Pergamon Replica
Cast replicas of the Pergamon head are for sale in the Istanbul museum, at least in 1993 I got mine from there. I dont remember the price, but it was not expensive. In Greek museum shops they sell casts of the Pella head, Akropolis head, Olympia head, Pella statuette, the little heads from the tomb ...

Re: Artabazus, Parmenion, & Barsine...The Perfect Persian Pl
Arrian mentions describing the wedding of Susa only the highest ranking persian brides. After Dareios', Oxyatros' and Atropates' daughters come two sisters and the daughter of Barsine. Therefore she stands still in the highest esteem in the eyes of the king, and we can suppose, that she came herself...

Re: Tomb of Alexander IV
This item was on exhibition in the Royal Tombs Museum, where I have seen it, and indeed it's the Phrygian god of Fertility. You can see the rest of the Phrygian headdress. Alexander is wearing a longslaved chiton in the mosaik, in northern Greece the winter is very cold and you surely need to dress ...

Re: Artabazus, Parmenion, & Barsine...The Perfect Persian Pl
I just want to add, that Alexander named this boy of Barsine with the most important and honourable name in his opinion - his ancestor Herakles, who was worshipped as god in Makedonia (inscription from the palace in Aigai "Herakles Patroos"). This name is program as well as his coins, and ...

Re: birthday/deathday
It may not matter to US, but I'm guessing it did to the ancients. Anyway, yes, Hestia was sometimes included in the Olympians although I'm not sure who she replaced. And Hades wasn't included in the twelve (he didn't live on Olympia), but Dionysos. There were plenty of other lesser "Olym...

Re: birthday/deathday
The date is the Autumnal Equinox in 336BC, which means that Alexander reigned for 12 years 8 months and 14 days in the Julian calendar (the first time, I believe, that it has been possible to state the duration exactly since antiquity.) Andrew you are surely right about the offical accession date, ...

Re: Anniversary of Alexander's death
Ok, you are right from your point of view. But this doesn’t mean that your point of view is the only right and acceptable one. There are many people around the world who worship Alexander, in all times since then, more than 2300 years now, and your argumentation won’t stop it.

Re: Afghan Treasures on exhibit in the US.
hello to all, I've got the catalogue and agree with Amyntoros There are a couple of possible "Alexanders" also: one a bronze "young horse rider" with fairly long hair and an anastole, very similar to other bronzes thought to be Alexander. Interestingly, the catalogue description ...

Re: Notes on 10 June
O yes, Alita, everything in Christian tradition which is not Jewish, is ancient pagan. Saint George is the Thracian horse rider, a very famous theme in ancient relief’s all over Thrace and Macedonia. He is a Thracian deity and is usually depicted killing a boar, watched by the holy serpent in a tree...

Re: The Greatest Greek!
You see it too one-sided. Alexander was not only the most courageous and smart commander in field. He laid the foundations for a new world. In the Hellenistic kingdoms flourished all kinds of sciences, arts, philosophical schools and technological inventions, people from different nations came toget...
