Re: Alexander's greatest moment
Greatest moment depends on the POV. Not sure what he would have said, if anything. My guess is he would have been puzzled by the question. Alexander doesnt strike me as a man who looked back, only forward. My own favourite is Gaugamela, although I think his decisiveness aged 16 going to war against ...

Re: location of Peuce
Hi Chris. There are not many contributors left, I'm afraid. We've had a couple of deaths, but the majority of people seem to have just drifted away. :( I knew Xenophon died, which was a great loss. maybe people drifted away for the same reason I did - life got in the way - and they'll come back. Ho...

location of Peuce
Hi all, it's been a long time, life got in the way :( pleased to be back. Question for the ancient geography experts: I'm preparing to retrace Alexander's Balkan campaign and got stuck trying to find where "Peuce" might have been. Doing a search in the forums only found two hits and Google...

Re: update Gaugamela model
Incredible work! Thanks for sharing. You must be very patient to accomplish all that. Are you going to do Persian side next? :) .... funny you should say that ! One of the reasons I posted the pictures is to get advice from the group here on how to build it up. During painting, it became obvious th...

Re: update Gaugamela model
Dear all, Three and a half years ago, this learned group of Alexander fans helped with advice on planning a model of Alexander's army and I resurrected the original thread to thank everyone, including Agesilaos who I read passed away :( Back in 2013, he sent me Marsden's "The Campaign of Gaugam...

For Info only: David Adams upcoming documentary
I suspect the documentary will not be for Alexander purists, nor give any startling historical insights. However, David Adams' photography usually nails the essence of a location.

update Gaugamela model
A year ago, many of the regulars here at pothos.org helped with the planning for a model of the battle of Gaugamela. I work away from home for many months of the year, so progress is slow. However, it's about two thirds complete now, ie 2500 figures. They are not lined up in battle order yet and the...

Re: Face of Alexander the Great
Her real achievement is not producing a photo of Alexander. Her real achievement is to come up with the idea of applying established methods of forensic science to ancient sculpture.marcus wrote: But I'm really not complaining, as I think she's done a pretty good job.
That's trail-blazing genius.

Re: Scientists to scan remains of King Philip II
In tomb I ?!? I thought there were only 3 skeletons:agesilaos wrote:Personally, I think that Tomb I held Philip II ...
1) Tomb II: male, mid forties, damaged R cheekbone
2) Tomb II: female, mid twenties
3) Tomb III: teenaged male, Alexander IV, uncontested (so far)
Is this incorrect?

Re: Scientists to scan remains of King Philip II
The facial disfigurement cannot rule out either man, yes Philip had suffered an arrow wound to the eye but nowhere is it stated he had difficulty eating or speaking, which seems the necessary corollary of such an extreme deformity; in fact he is a loquacious public speaker. Good point, and one I ha...

Re: Scientists to scan remains of King Philip II
I read this a while back and what stood out for me was that he did not understand the true conclusion of his work which was not that the body could not be Arrhidaios as he states, but only that you cannot tell from the bones whether they are from a wet or dry cremation and that the bones of Philip ...

Re: Scientists to scan remains of King Philip II
By the way, any idea if they have already come to a conclusion about the owner of that royal funerary scenario? Last time I heard about it, scientists were fighting with clubs about that. :| I used to get very confused about the lines of argument from both sides and your post prompted me to look ag...
