There might be something to this leaving a beautiful corpse business. I wonder why Alexander wanted to look like a youth even in his 30s. I'm sure his shaving resulted in a few eunuch jokes in Persia. :) The romantic side of me likes to think Hephaistion's death was a factor here. What do you guys ...

Very interesting topic. I see the comparison you are talking about regarding Achilles and Alexander both dying so young and how Alexander seemed destined to follow in his footsteps. I think that Alexander would probably have preferred to die in battle rather than poisoning/illness. I myself think it...

Re: Certainly do!

I have read a number of books on Alexander now, and am presently in Peter Green's book along with the Dodge book, and it is interesting to note the differences in author's attitudes. I recall one author whose name I don't remember now who said that Alexander considered the military life one of hono...

Porus, a worthy adversary or not?

The battle against Porus and his men was a hard battle and when it was finally over Alexander was said to admire Porus. From reading what happened in that battle Porus seemed both brave and intelligent to me. The last charge that Porus' men had was with Porus leading them and he fought to the end. H...

I am a little skittish on posting in this heated topic, but I never really was one to bite my tongue. I think most will agree that Alexander was by far no saint. He knew what he was doing and what his men were doing. He was no fool either. There is a reason he conquered as many as he did and th...

Predicated, of course, on the belief that Alexander III was murdered. Not every historian or Pothosian accepts the murder theory, myself being one of those who continues to believe it was an illness that killed him. :) Best regards, I guess I forgot to write "in my opinion" sorry about th...

I thought maybe some of you may like to read this about Alexander IV. It has a picture I was referring to earlier showing Alexander IV in an Egyptian relief.

I know that some of the places Alexander had conquered were rebelling soon after he left them. It would have been very difficult to run that huge of an empire especially that the Persians were viewed as barbarians and not equals. The elder generals and soldiers didn't like taking some of the Persia...

I agree that it was incredibly despicable what Cassander did to Roxane and Alexander IV (even though Roxane allegedly poisoned Stateira and her unborn son). I can't help to think though, could anyone - even Alexander - rule such a vast and multicultural kingdom? I recall a historian (I can't rememb...

Alexander IV

How despicable is it what Cassander did to Roxane and Alexander's son years after Alexander's death?! I just got done reading Andrew Chugg's book Alexander's Lovers and the part about Roxane. It's such a shame that Alexander IV was not able to be king. The people wanted him to have his Father's king...

Split thread - Darius: Deserter or Deserted?

Thanks, I knew it was made after his death, but couldn't off the top of my head think of the year. I had to run and look in one of my books and it had some information on it. It says "Roman copy from Pompeii of an original Greek painting by Philoxenus." There is a site that has a p...

Re: A Bit of Shameless Self-Promo

Hi All, I've been lurking for the most part, but I thought I'd step out for a time-honored bit of horn tooting :) If you live in the UK, parts of the EU, SA or Aus, then beginning August 1st my novel Memnon should be available in bookstores. From the back cover: In the 4th century BC, the Mediterra...
