The 311 peace treaty between the Diodochi
When the Diodochi called a truce in December 311, would they all (other than Seleucos who had returned to Babylon) have been present to 'sign' it? And if so, would they have met somewhere like in Syria to do this? I know that Ptolemy had returned to Alexandria from Syria the previous summer but woul...

Re: The Golden Mean
I understand a paperback issue is about to be released. It is a popular book here in Canada and the author has been awarded or nominated for a number of literary awards. However, there are some issues with the book (at least after reading it and several of my friends reading it we all agreed there i...

Re: Funeral's rites in Macedonia
In regards to the mass graves found at Pydna, could they have been the mass burials of all those who died within the fortress when the seige happened while Olympias and the others were trapped there by Kassandros men? When I visited Pynda some years ago I had the privilege of meeting with one of the...

Re: Funeral's rites in Macedonia
I just took it that it was the symbol of the King in Persia and the King (Shah) was the embodiment of the god Ahura Mazda, so it was symbolic of Alexander in that way, that he was the supreme ruler, guided (or born) of the God. I didn't really note any other symbolism in it and i've seen the movie s...

Ptolemy's army at Gaza
Does anyone have an idea of how large Ptolemy's army was at Gaza? And possible in comparison to how large an army Antigonos/Demetrius might have had? thanks in advance.

Re: Funeral's rites in Macedonia
Can anyone enlighten me as to how a traitor would be buried in Macedon? Would they be allowed the usual funeral rites, cremation, or just dumped somewhere and their body left for the carrion birds? I am thinking specifically of the murder of Aristonous at Amphipolis (on Kassandros orders). Was he ev...

Re: alex in afghanistan
This is so fascinating and wonderful to see these photos. Thanks for sharing. I'm writing a historical fiction novel about the fall of Alexander's dynasty and have studied about him since I was in my teens so any little glimpse of his journey in the past is a treasure!

This was an absolutely fascinating post. Thanks so much for sharing all this knowlege and the photos which are fabulous! Too bad you're there in the role you are in, John, and not able to tramp around there and explore like the archaeologist you'd like to have been.

Can any tell me the correct name for the area of Gaza at the time of Alexander and Ptolemy? Was it still officially Philistia?

The Golden Mean
Here's an interesting new book by Vancouver writer Anabell Lyon, THE GOLD MEAN, in Aristotle's point of view when he is hired to tutor young Alexander. a really excellent read and she was nominated for 3 top literary prizes for this first novel. Didn't make the Giller Prize, but has just won the $23...

Re: Polyperchon's son Alexandros
thanks for the info. There was so much of it I found it rather mind-boggling (Diodorus, I mean). As I'm writing historical fiction rather than a history book I only need the most important facts so I will try to get my head around all this and see what is necessary for the plot of my novel. I'd had ...
