Re: Ancient Greek music

Greetings Pothosians,
There is an excellent exploration in the collection "Music of Greek Antiquity" put out by The Hellenic Art of Music.A bit old now, but if you like the history of music, a good collection

Re: New historical fiction on Alexander and friends

Greetings, Memory, "I also enjoyed reading ‘Aniketos.’ I thought it was an easier read than the first book, which was made difficult by an unusually harsh portrayal of both Philip and Olympias. If the first volume was a treatise on power, the second one was on change and immutability. In a worl...

Re: New historical fiction on Alexander and friends

Greetings, " I've already (in a previous post) mentioned the misleading technique of opening with a character who never appears (and is barely mentioned once) subsequently. You can get away with this sort of opening in a movie if the character is clearly cannon-fodder and is blown away on scree...

Re: New historical fiction on Alexander and friends

Greetings Alexias, Thanks- I think <laughing> "Glad you're enjoying it, though I doubt I will bother. The first book did not engage me (and I think this was partly because the author's inexperience of novel writing clearly showed), and I was left with no clear picture of Alexander's character t...

Re: New historical fiction on Alexander and friends

Greetings, Just wanted to say Vol 2 of Argent Wood's trilogy just came out: "Aniketos"... and I am enjoying it as much as the first book. It isn't for everyone, and the Alexander is not everybody's Alexander, but I am finding it absolutely feasible in terms of the characters and action; fu...

Re: Power or Decadence? Luxury Under the Achaemenids, Athenians, and Alexander the Great

Greetings Sweetmemory, Good read and thought-provoking even as it relates to the modern view on luxury and wealth as both power and entitlement. Especially appreciated the brief take on how luxury can be used to solidify allies and seduce others into your camp. Still works today! Thank you for posti...

Re: Alexander the Great quotes

Greetings, I went to the quotes site; it appears that there are SOME attributions for some of the quotes, so at least a few could be looked up- haven't verified the sources, however. And some appear to be interpretations of things found in sources. Could be interesting to verify actual source and wo...

Re: Alexander the Great quotes

Greetings Alexias,
I know of a couple members in the ATG Reading group that had problems posting initially, so I suspect it's a random glitch in the system? because the posts were fairly harmless and on the second try, they went through.
Hope you have better luck next time!

Re: New historical fiction on Alexander and friends

Greetings Alexias, "Thanks for your reply on this. I am aware of why the author made the choices he did - for example, the racy opening scene is designed as a hook to pull the reader in, to show him that this is a dangerous world and that the novel is not one for children. However, for me the n...

Fiction Reviews Needed

Greetings, We are all familiar with the Renault trilogy, Manfredi trilogy, And Zimmerman's duet (a third coming in the future?) but here are some other fictions that may not have been read or known by Pothos members. There is probably something for every taste and preference somewhere in this list: ...

Re: New historical fiction on Alexander and friends

Greetings, This was an interesting review. "First off, in the opening chapter we spend a lot of time investing in Hephaestion's great-grandmother's fears and his removal by his uncle (nothing about his mother's fears/grief). Then we switch to an infantile Alexander complaining that Hephaestion ...

Re: Was Philip II Even Greater than Alexander the Great?

Greetings NGS, "Well, Philip was a better military brain..." I don't know- I think Alexander was the better military mind... but I also think he took on too much too fast .. "..., better at administration..." It would have been interesting to see what Alexander would have done if...
