Re: Yet ANOTHER potential tomb...
Thank you all for your links and general input. If it's the grave of Alexander IV and/or Roxane, that would be amazing as well though obviously a bit of a let-down compared to finding the grave of Alexander himself. This isn't a reliable comparison on any level, but what you are saying about the imp...

Yet ANOTHER potential tomb...
Dear all, Because I am that awful sort of forum member who only turns up every seven or so years (somewhat like a comet, I suppose), I am completely out of touch with what happens here these days. If I'm breaking any sort of formal or informal rule here (by speculating wildly on no grounds whatsoeve...

Re: Some more Alexander pics
I always feel a little stalkerish whenever I view someone's Facebook photos without them knowing (yes, even when they post a link to said photos in a public forum), so this is just to say that 1) I've looked at your photos (phew! I feel a lot less stalkerish now) and 2) what amazing photos they were...

Re: Gedrosian desert!
Thanks for your reply, Paralus. It may be beside the point, but I just think the issue of the people in tow of the army raises a number of interesting questions, and in the case of Alexander, maybe there's no instance that makes these questions more acute than the march through Gedrosia. Whereas I u...

Re: Gedrosian desert!
My interest is not the number who perished but how and why did those who survived manage to do so? It appears that those who were sacrificed in this desert run were at the back of the pack, but those up in the front managed to make their way through... You draw attention to something that has been ...

Re: Gedrosian desert!
So is Alexnader like Franklin or Shackleton? I love this take on the question. :) The argument has been put forward that a significant part of the failure of the Franklin expedition was down to the arrogant attitude of its participants. That is, had they not had such a developed sense of cultural s...

Re: About the King of Sidon
So ... it could be that the "perfume" was a lightly scented combination of essential oils sent to Alexander because Abdalonymus knew he had pain and/or problems in the ankles - something which wouldn't surprise me given the hardships of the campaign. Just a suggestion on my part 'cause, y...

Re: ptsd in Alexanders army
In addition to the religious/military aspect, I wonder about the strategic side of things. Celeanae had a very strategic location and it would have made no sense to sack it. If this small town of Branchidae had been equally important for communications and whatnot, maybe it would have sufficed to ki...

Re: ptsd in Alexanders army
Has there ever been, to anyones knowledge, any evidence brought forward of post traumatic stress disorder in the macedonian army? I can't seem to find anything that deals specifically with Alexander or his Army. I think that if one were to look at a list of PTSD symptoms and compare it to fictional...

New book...
Hi everyone,I just wanted to inform you that there's a new book on ATG out on the Swedish market. It's called "Alexander den store" ("Alexander the great", duh) and is written by historian Bengt Liljegren. I'm only half-way through it at the moment, so I'm not going to submit a r...

Re: MANFREDI TRILOGY
When I first got interested in Alexander I read the Renault novels and I thought they really added personality to the character I'd read about in the non-fiction books. I suppose when I read the Manfredi books the first time I was still under Renault's spell and found it difficult to accept the pict...

Re: MANFREDI TRILOGY
The first time I read Manfredi's trilogy I didn't really like it that much. But having just finished re-reading it, I must say I've changed opinion. I think it's really good. On a literary note I think it leaves a few things to be desired, but it compares well to most other "fiction" on Al...
