Andrew, is everything you mention here cited from Polybius? Or are there some other sources? If so can you name them?Trying to nail this down...Love & peace,

Makedonia slave-holding?
Hi all:I thought this question deserved a thread all its own. I very much need to know the answer to this, as do all of us who are writing Alexander books, in my opinion...I take it Hammond did not say where he got the idea that Makedonians didn't hold slaves? Seems rather a large assertion to *not*...

Re: Antony and Caesar
Hi Dave et al:I had a friend who went to an all-boys' school, so I know indirectly what you're talking about... 'Nuff said. Glad you recovered!Anyway, I don't know about Antony and Caesar, but with Alexander, here's some evidence that springs to mind: Curtius says right out that Alexander had sex wi...

Re: comments about the pink dollar
I hope no one minds that I step in and clarify something here. The original "pink dollar" comment was made by Karl Soundy, in a thread entitled "bogoas" (sic) that has now dropped off the page -- second post from the top of the thread. He said that Oliver Stone was making his mov...

Re: my mistake...
A guy who played a good Steerpike would make a terrific Kassander, I think! So BBC has done the Gormenghast Trilogy? Mind you... reading those books *is* like watching a movie. How faithful a rendition is it?L&P,

Re: Green on Alexander in Athens
Hi Tre et al:It's funny, I could have sworn I read it in Robin Lane Fox, but no. He mentions three envoys but doesn't say who the other two were, and gives as a reference Justin 9.5.5 -- alas I have only Books 11 & 12. Fuller gives Parmenion as the other envoy.Anyway, Philip had all manner of me...

Re: Green on Alexander in Athens
Hi Tre et al:Tre, your argument would make sense to me except for one thing -- Philip sent Parmenion to Athens also, the man he said (whenever he said it) was the only real general he'd ever found. When he had such ambitious plans of conquest, would he have been willing to risk *both* his best sub-g...

Re: Has anyone here visited Cyrus' tomb?
Hi Jay:Well, with the thought that it might somehow help in future searches, I'll tell you how I found it -- I did a Google image search using the keywords "Cyrus tomb". Because you were asking about size, I looked for a photo of the tomb with a person in it also. Didn't find any, but I di...

Re: Has anyone here visited Cyrus' tomb?
Hi Jay:Look here: http://www.caravanserai-tours.com/pasargadae.htmGives dimensions of the tomb, and has one artist's impression with a surrounding building and people, to give an idea of the size of the thing. From the way the description is worded, it sounds like the inscription is gone.Love & ...

I can imagine Alexander, if he could speak today, saying, "Get a grip, people... it's STILL not ichor, it's STILL just plain old blood..."Love & peace,

Re: Alexander the Great's Divinity - Part II
Since Alexander had been raised in this belief system -- and the particularly Homeric version of it the Makedonians held -- why would he not have thought it himself? And yet he would not have been overwhelmed or bewildered by it -- because his culture allowed for the possibility, and he'd been raise...

Re: Alexander the Great's Divinity - Part I
Hi all:This question can't be answered without a definition of "believing himself divine."If you are asking, did Alexander think himself an entirely immaterial being, and thus not subject to physical death, the answer is surely no. That would be insanity, and if he'd ever shown symptoms, t...
