Avoiding Olympias

Hmmm . . . I really have a strong impression that Olympias was one of those women to whom intrigue was life, and who was probably constantly trying to work around Philip to get her way during his life - and trying to work around Antipas after his death. I'm not sure that she would have been given an...

It looks really good, and I find it much easier to follow in discussions than the old style of threaded posts. Thank you!

Re: Why is Arrian considered most reliable?

Jan, do you ever find yourself wondering if one of the reasons that the Romans didn't much care for Alexander - perhaps didn't even discuss him that much, so that Arrian had to write about him, was that a Macedonian general covered in glory got up their nose. ROMANS were supposed to be the world's g...

Re: Why is Arrian considered most reliable?

I think scholars generally find Arrian most reliable for all the reasons cited - but I emphasize that we know he used contemporary sources (none of the rest, as I recall, even say what their sources were), he was less interested than Plutarch in writing "moral history," (Plutarch can be qu...

Re: A Thanks to Pothos

Roman I may be, but my first site was on Julius Caesar (http:// heraklia.fws1.com). I'd always wondered about a man who could make Caesar weep, but it wasn't (I hope this doesn't destroy all my credibility instantly) until I saw Stone's movie that Alexander went from a marble statue to a man, for me...

Re: A Thanks to Pothos

LOL - so glad no one has thrown me out of the group yet! Writing about Alexander, especially for one who's field has always been Republican Rome - well I was really nervous to get ya'll's reaction. I feel a bit less nervous now ;)BTW, one of you wrote me saying it was hard to find my email: it's her...

A Thanks to Pothos

A new Alexander site

I have lurked here for about a year, since I decided to supplement my web sites on Julius Caesar and Augustus by going completely Graeco-Macedonian and studying Alexander. I must thank the members of Pothos for more good suggestions, ideas, posts, recommendations on reading, and more, than a year's ...

The Oracle Thing

I apologize, I've been lurking for some time but a bit shy to post. I wondered if there is a place in the Forum where ya'll have discussed, not only the Siwah experience, but the fact that Alexander apparently went to the oracles at Dodona and Delphi - and Didyma? - before he got to Siwah. It seems ...

I would be very interested to see your remastered version! Every time I look at the illustration of the mosaic, I long to wonder how it would look if it weren't so damaged.

Re: Alexander nominated for six Razzies

I'm sad to hear that too. I thought Alexander, though the script wasn't good, was an amazing movie and single-handedly brought me from years of study in ancient history (Julius Caesar) to a fascination with Alexander the Great. So it made at least ONE convert. And I do think that the critics trashing...
