Re: A new statue of Alexander ? Alexandria + SOME FINDINGS
Well it is on the edge of one proposed location of the Sema in that reconstrucion. Andrew was putting the Sema one block closer to the Canopic road, others put if further deep into the palaces, but I think most people agree now it is around the height of the central crossroad intersection and on the...

Re: The Kasta tomb Amphipolis - not a "Macedonian" tomb?
I agree with the essence of your comments Xenophon, but I am still curious to see what arguments back up any of Lefantzis' claims about that subject, since I find hard to believe for instance that he didnt at least think to compare volume instead of length. Lefantzis claims that there is a paper whe...

Re: The Kasta tomb Amphipolis - not a "Macedonian" tomb?
Lefantzis statements appear always incomplete, partly because that is his way of making presentations and partly due to bad press. But just to clarify what has been said about the walls: -About 497 m of walls at the N/NE of Amphipolis that have been excavated in the past show signs of large scale re...

Large Ptolemaic building discovered at Alexandria
Large scale Ptolemaic-era building discovered at Alexandria, at Shalalat Gardens, near the intersection of the central streets of the ancient city: http://www.hriac.com/projects/shallalat-project-2016/excavation-report-2016/ Use of the building assumed to be public, not private, part of it is still ...

Re: Aristotle's tomb(?)
The author said he has submitted a series of papers on the subject (he said volumes) that we should see published soon, I hope. The finding was already reported in 1996 in a publication, but its association with Aristotle is new. I will look for the reference

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
FYI: https://www.academia.edu/1481470/The_Imagery_of_the_Etrusco-Faliscan_Pantheon Scasato has two temples, one dated to late 4th centruy BC, where Apollo Scasato comes from, and the other in early 4th centruy BC, or even late 5th centruy BC, where the supposed Olympias and Philip come from. Obvious...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
I am only going to comment on two statements and hope the discussion will move into other topics from the cremation cemetery, which has been over-discussed. I made all my points, if I keep replying, I will only try and rephrase the same things written before and its not worth the effort anymore. I a...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
a) Because the area was used for tombs in the Hellenistic period during which Hill 133 was also abandoned, so the abandonment of Hill 133 evidently did not cause the cemetery use to end; b) Because cemeteries tend to persist in cemetery usage even when there are marked changes of population as a ge...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
That means that less than one cremated bone fragment per cubic metre of cemetery soil (when excavated to create the cist tomb) could explain the entire cremated bone yield from the Amphipolis Tomb. Ok, thanks, so that means for every 11-12 sq. meters you dig at Kastas, at 1 m. depth in the area on ...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
We now appear to be agreeing that it is difficult to establish precedents for simultaneous inhumations and cremations in the same grave. That is my point. The cist grave in the Amphipolis Tomb is patently a simultaneous structure. It has been suggested that the small chamber contained a cremation b...
