Re: Appropriate Ancient Spelling for Hephaistion...
The spelling 'haphaistion' wasn't proper of the Attic Koinè, but rather Doric, or even Macedonian (where probably the name was spelt 'Habhastion', like Philip was spelt 'Bhilippos') . Long \a\ becomes \e\ in Attic pronunciation, but remains \a\ in all other ancient Greek dialects.

Your novel seems very interesting! May you tell us when it will be published and who is the publishing house?

Re: A day in the Byzantine museum of Athens
When I watch Byzantine icons and history I feel myself a terribly ignorant person, because I know few names, historical dates and artists. I'm striked by the icon of Saint Christophorus (?) who has a dog's head and is very like the Egyptian god Anubis. Do you know why? Thanks a lot for sharing these...

Re: The new Heraklion city museum, Crete.
Thank you for posting beautiful photos! I'm glad the Heraklion city museum is now open again; I visited it twice some years ago and I was amazed by its contents. I remember very well a museum attendant, a lady, who looked a lot like the lady painted in a Minoan fresco called 'La Parisienne': I wishe...

Re: Tactike theoriai – manuals or philosophy
There is also a fourth manual of tactike theoriai, the older one by Aeneas Tacticus (IV cent. B.C.).

Re: A unique medal
Very interesting indeed, but it seems to me the battle celebrated by this coin was the one of Idaspes (as told in the link you posted here), not the one of Gaugamela. As told in the post, the elephant is a symbol of India, even if there were elephants in the battle of Gaugamela too. By the way I wou...

Re: Photos II
Really gorgeous colours and dress! The more I watch the more I remember Sardinia and its mamuthones: they wear similar, not the same, masks: they put on even woman's scarves over their heads! Do they pretend to be women ( or better Bacchai)?

Re: 22 FOTOS
Really amazing pictures! Besides, their clothes look like the ones worn in Sardinia during carnival by a group of men called Mamuthones. They wore black skins of sheep (called mastruca), many big and small bells and over their face they put a black leather mask or a black bull head (while the ones i...

Re: Alexander - The Ultimate Cut
Effectively there was no need to refer to Prometheus as a benefactor of mankind: in this age Herakles had very good credentials to behave as a hero friend of men. At least from Pindarus on (not forgetting Isocrates in his Exhortation to Philip) many Greek orators and philosophers had tried to persua...

Re: Mithridates, son-in-law of King Darius III
The same Mithridates (identical spelling), it seems, is quoted only another time by Plutarch, Mor. 326f, together with Spithridates, as being both killed at Granicus' battle.

Re: Alexander's writings?
There is, however, a hint to Alexander as an author in Athenaeus, Deipn.13, 586 d. He wrote: "The author of Agen, the little satyric drama, whether it be Python of Catana or King Alexander himself, says, etc." And again Athenaeus, ibid. 13, 595 e: "All this is confirmed by the testimo...

Very interesting indeed! We use comb so many times a day, yet we pay so little attention to this instrument. But the ones you find here are of course special and precious ones. Thanks for posting this link.

Re: Christmas Present
I think you are right, Alexia, about the youth's head at p.223: it isn't a portrait of Hephaistion. Not only the mouth and the eyes are different from his recognized imagines, but this head is tilted to the right side, and in general it seems more likely an approximate portrait of Alexander. As to t...
