Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
Well I would have to consider myself a 'fan' of Alexander. I've read too much on him with fascination to try to convince myself otherwise. I'm also a 'fan' of Philip. I do not believe Pothos is a 'fan site' though. I've asked so many questions here and received so many good answers that many of my v...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
So is the original question in the thread too complex to get straight answers or can we take a poll on who the ''greater' king was, and who the 'better' king was? Id have to go with Alexander as the 'Greater', and Philip as the 'better'. Alexander gets the 'greater' in my eyes just because of the sh...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
Again? Really? I'm reading the SAME four or five comments over and over again. Its getting his friends exiled, the Gedrosian, Prosyknesis, Cleitus, and calling himself a god. We don't call him "Alexander the Fair", or "Alexander the Reasonable", or "Alexander the Intelligent...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
Myself I would drop the “exceptional”. It may well have been an easy choice for Philip. To me, what’s truly exceptional about it is that Philip picked the man who’d become the most influential philosopher in history. This says something about Philip’s judgement. I believe Philip was an exeptional k...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
Perhaps I should have clarified what was meant by highly educated. It appears Philip took exceptional care to ensure nothing but the best for his heir. Imagine today one of our parents arranging for us the privilege of being tutored by the pre-eminent expert in their respective fields, a leading ph...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
"The level of Alexanders intelligence should in my opinion be inferred from his actions and they're consequences..." is Alexander a special case? Or do you feel that everyones intelligence should be inferred from they're actions and the consequences of those actions?

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
I don't disagree that he was educated, though I'd personally drop the "highly". I disagree that he was particularly intelligent. This based on the numerous occasions during his life when he showed poor judgment. The level of Alexander's intelligence should in my opinion be inferred from h...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
... I firmly hold that Philip is the greater. Now such a bald-faced statement does need a little explanation. I am of the opinion that while they are many qualities and deficiencies that we may attribute to each of these great kings, the final and only benchmark that should be the deciding factor i...

Re: alexanders visit to Troy
That's great to hear Marcus! Supposedly your able to see the charred areas where the city burnt at the end of the trojan war(?). And the Achilles tomb (or lack of) is another reason why I'm wondering if the locals just put up a little 'show' for over eager greeks looking for Homers Troy. We of cours...

Re: 300 suits of armor
Was Sparta collaborating with Persia mentioned in our main Alexander sources? I do not remember reading about it in any of them. But like I said, could be my memory letting me down again.
