Re: Site of the Battle of the Granicus
a) Korpe believes they identified Hermoton and based on that, reconstructs Alexander's route through the mountains further south. But there's no information as to exactly where Hermoton is. I think there was a slide which did show a map with the site that has been excavated on it, but I'd have to h...

Re: Site of the Battle of the Granicus
Dr Reames has posted a video on her YouTube page featuring Reyhan Korpe, who has done extensive surveys on Alexander's route to the Granicus and the battle site. https://youtu.be/vrFsJIGNRgY?feature=shared I'm afraid I found this rather difficult to follow, but I think the gist of what he is saying ...

Re: Possible Alexander
Hi, Hyphis, thank you! I hope they don't leave it out all year round as the frost and rain would damage it badly. Anyway, here is the Blenheim head. 2a66206457fc93fe4aeeed67a73e7c83.jpg System1988 told me when I originally posted a picture of this bust several years ago that it has a Roman cuirass, ...

Possible Alexander
On a recent visit to Hever Castle in Kent, England - famous as the home of Anne Boleyn - I found this in the Italian Gardens. Could it be a bust of Alexander? It was made of marble, the hair is too long to be a Roman (though it might be a Roman bust), and there was a hint of an anastole hairstyle. A...

Quick Calendar - July
A quick calendar of events in Alexander’s life that can reasonably be placed in a specific month. Obviously this does not cover everything. July Year ............ Alexander’s age ............ Event 356 .......................................... Birth of Alexander 20th or 26th 346 ................. 1...

Re: words, words, words
Interesting question. I would suggest that Arrian wouldn't have had as much difficulty understanding the primary sources as we have understanding Shakespeare's idioms because his society was basically the same as in Alexander's day (apart from Roman dominance), especially in the Greek-speaking world...

Re: Alexander at Cannae?!
Hi, Dean, afraid we are a bit thin on the ground these days. Apparently what ensued was an absolute massacre and Freeman mentions in his book how some Roman soldiers were found with their heads buried where they had attempted to suffocate themselves. Eek! Would they have had time for that? Could the...

Re: A film about Cheronea and the army of lovers
I find it a bit difficult to believe that the Sacred Band was made of exclusively 'gay' couples, as the modern view seems to make out. It would have been a bit difficult to find that many exclusive couples in a comparatively small city with the necessary age, wealth and fitness. One or both of the c...

Don't choose something from the movie or a novel as they are mostly made up.
It might be apocryphal, but I quite like ' That's not ichor; that's blood.'

Re: Another Secret of the Kasta Tomb?
Hm. I've only looked at the first article so far, and I kind of doubt that Stellarium is a good enough piece of software to work out what the sky looked like 2,350 years ago, the premise being that the tomb was aligned with the winter solstice. Stellarium is a great piece of free software and I have...

That would be good if you could encourage others to join the forum! There are probably only about half a dozen people left who contribute, but a few more lurkers. However, those who do contribute include Dr. Jeanne Reames, who is an Alexander/Hephaestion expert! She does teach full time though, so m...

Re: New website - opinion
Thanks. A lot of the information on the main pages of the website is out of date, or current thinking on the subject has changed. It is also not exhaustive, and personally, I always found it a bit difficult to navigate. You might find the two boards 'Topics for study' and 'Alexander sources' easier ...

Hi, and welcome! I have been trying to update the phpBB software which the forum uses, but unsuccessfully. Glad you have joined the forum, but please be aware that there are very few contributors left these days (the forum has been going a long time). However, I will try to answer any questions you ...
