Josephus and a date for Philip's death
I was reading Josephus' description of the assassination of Caligula and came across this interesting passage. Josephus claims that Caligula and Philip were assassinated on the same day, the 24th of January. Jewish Antiquities 9.95 "It is also agreed that the day of the year was the same as tha...

Re: Itinerarium Alexandri
My thanks to Marcus for sending me the translation. I had not even heard about this until sometime last year. Its a very interesting read. So what do we know about the author? When was it written? When the author says Lord Constantius, more than excellent Emperor is he referring to Constantius II (r...

Re: Latest on Alexander's death
Thanks for the article. I believe that Alexander contracted Typhus and was then poisoned by the cup bearer Iollas to ensure his death. Some of the best evidence in my mind is the fact that according to Diodorus(book XIX 11.) "Olympias... overturned the tomb of Iollas, avenging, as she said, the...

Re: Anniversary of Alexander's death
The death of a conqueror does not inspire much of anything within me I'm afraid... BOO! :D It's Alexander ! ...And he was much more than a simple conqueror  True. A robber, too, and a murderer. An alcoholic. An incompetent administrator and a failed empire builder. Not to mention a delusional...

Re: Alexander The Great - True Origins (Trailer)
Alexander was half Epirot, half Macedonian. Neither of these ethnic groups exists today in their ancient form. If anyone can claim Alexander as their own it is the inhabitants of Pella in the province of Macedonia, in Greece.

Books on Craterus?
Are their any books or academic papers on the life Craterus of Orestis? I did a search of Amazon,Chapters, ebay, barnes and noble etc. I realize their are no sources dedicated entirely to Craterus (ie a life in Plutarch) but that doesn't negate the mans importance or value as a historical subject. W...

Re: Status of St. Mark body exhumation?
Hi sergitoz. I would like to see the remains of "St. Mark" tested as well. But I seriously doubt the Catholic church will allow it. It's probably just an anonymous late medieval skeleton.

Re: Monument Lifted From Alexandria
Now I'm waiting for divers to find a water tight tomb, where Alexander lies perfectly preserved in his glass sarcophagus, arrayed in his brilliant unblemished Armour, lying on a bed of the lost histories of Cleitarchus, Ptolemy, Aristobolus and Callisthenes. Sigh.....

Re: Omissions in Diodorus
I see the lacunae now. "The end of 328/7 and the beginning of 327/6 have been lost in a long break in the manuscript from which our text derives".

Omissions in Diodorus
I just finished reading Diodorus 16.66-17 for the first time. The narrative seems to leap quickly from Alexanders campaigns in Bactria/Sogdiana to India. There is no mention of the events at the sogdian rock, oxyarthes, his marriage to Roxana (or Roxana at all) or the death of Cleitus the black. Why...
