Re: More press activity for Pothos

I had look at that book when it came out. It was written for general consumption to go along with a TV series. What else would you expect. I was more disapointed by his last book on Sparta. Oh my god. Don't waste your time if you are a scholar. I should have known better. He goes so far as to change...

Re: Macedonia vs Sparta

hi Karl, No dobt Alexander would have adapted his tatics to suit and would have fared well I suspect. However Aleander was'nt the only acedonian general i was answering the question on the lose parameters provided ie Macedonian. I wonder how ATG would have coped without being able to utilise his cav...

Re: Macedonia vs Sparta

Quite right Yiannis, everybody does tend to forget that the Spartans were not alone. There was actually about 4000 troops in all unti the last day or so. The Thepians shared the same fate as the Spartans, appeartly by choice. This is cause for admiration, however I think not to put ot fine a point o...

Re: Macedonia vs Sparta

I suppose it depends on what era you are talking about. If we are talking about the Persian Wars when the Spartans fought Xerxes at Thermopylae then No chance in hell. The Spartans were by far and away the best fighters in the world. You must however take into account the superiority of their equipm...

Re: Alexander and debt

KArl did you work your figures out on ATG expiditionary force alone? And what about the fleet? For all the use it was. Good to here from you. I have alwasy beleived he was heavily indebted but have never had time to crunch the figures.

Re: talent worth..

There was a gold talent but I think you really should be considering the Silver talent. If not otherwise specified the talent was silver and nearly 26 kilograms in weight.

Re: The Granikos battle

Hi Karl,It is so bloddy hot down here tonight I could really do with some air conditioning, know any good installers?Embolon I though means to drive into something, which would usually be a wedge. I don't think you are right about Leuktra, I think embolon in that instance was because the formation w...

Re: The Granikos battle

You are right of course and I am disapointed with myself for making an eror based on a modern article I know to be full of mistakes. I was sucked in by PA Manti erronious translation from the Ancient World Vol 25 1994.. He claims but spikes were called soters because they were saviours. It sounded r...

Re: The Granikos battle

I kind of agree with you but about the armourment of the Phalanx and Cavalry during GÇ£pitched battlesGÇ¥ however I donGÇÖt think you could really describe Granicus as a pitched battle in the conventional sense. It was more like a skirmish on a grand scale, the only part of the battle that was reall...

Re: The Granikos battle

Karl,As usual you have raised an interesting question. I agree with most of what you have said but will have to check my books when I get home on a couple of others. If you need Fullers book I can copy any bits you need, I have no problem with that. I am interested to know if you think ATG used Sari...

Re: Alexander's most difficult battle.

I am with you on this one Yiannis. The battle of the Hydaspsis reall tested ATG. He had to be patient and wait for his opertunity which was difficult for him and his men. Anticipating battle is wearing on troops at the best of times. Add their distance from home as you have mentioned, the unknown va...

Re: RE: Funeral Games (customs)

Hi Ruth,It may not be completely relivent but you probably should check out Robert Garland's book. The Greek way of death. Many of the customers are similiar if not the same. The book centres around Athens to a large degree but should be helpful.
