Robin Lane Fox

Post by Linda »

Robin Lane Fox was on the radio this morning talking about his role as historical advisor on the film. He was in the first fifteen of every the cavalry charge - and was extremely excited about the whole thing. He described the film as a "historical drama", but one which would concentrate (correctly, in his view) on Alexander as a visionary leader - aiming for conquest and the integration of the races he ruled over, rather than the "modern minimalist" view of him as a paranoid tyrant. He was full of praise for Oliver Stone as an enthusiastic, open-minded film-maker, but neatly side-stepped questions about Farrell's interpretation of Alexander, instead just describing him as charming and more sensitive than his hell-raiser reputation would suggest.I got the impression that Lane Fox just loves battles and that those parts of the film will be magnificent, but the story/dialogue may be less memorable. But he did say the film will be a classic, bemoaned that fact that Greek isn't taught in schools any more, and was full of praise at the toughness of ancient cavelrymen's arses.Linda

Contrast that sharply with Oprah's show with Pitt and Bana on the upcoming Troy. While the audience gave the film a standing ovation and she praised O'Toole as a legend, all Oprah seemed interested in was how Pitt got his buns so tight. It's gonna take a lot more than teaching ancient Greek to repair that! Thanks for the info Linda.Regards,Tre

HiI saw the recent BBC 4 programme & RLF came over as a complete ATG nut - a life long fan, and he became quite emotional about the prospect of riding into battle, albeit in the movie. I hope the piece of film he featured in is used in the final edit. I too got the impression he felt Farrell was not quite right for the role - but then, who is?Regards,Chris
