Us ouside the USA (and most within it) grew up reading, hearing, and watching things set in visions of part of the USA which were totally alien to our experience. It worked out OK!

The way wars work in American TV shows or films are nothing like real wars (and a lot of Americans are military veterans) but people get used to the conventions too.
