lay-out of Macedonian fortresses

Post by ruthaki »

I'm just writing the part about Pydna in my novel Shadow of the Lion and although I visited there a few years ago, the only remains left were of a much later fortress than the one at Alexander's time. I did, however, get a chance to talk to the archaelogists who were working there and the one who had found the trench Kassandros had dug around the original fort. What I need to know is the lay-out of those fortresses. Did they have a wall with a walk-way so things could be observed outside? Where would the royals be housed and what could they see from their quarters? Would Olympias have been stoned inside the fortress or outside? Could someone enlighten me please? Some of these technicalities need to be as correct as I can get them to make things work in my next few chapters.
Thanks so much in advance.
