The difference is where the leader leads FROM. We've switched from leading from the front to "leading" from the rear (even to "leading" from another country altogether), where the danger is almost nonexistant. When a leader is in front of the lines, he takes more care for those behind because HIS or HER life is dependent on the ones behind. When the followers are taking all the risks, its a lot easier use them like expendable parts.; a LOT of waste in modern warfare comes from this "lead from the rear" approach. However, officers have ALWAYS lived "better" to some degree than the followers- the difference is in degree. In a culture where sex was seen as natural, knowing your leaders HAD it sometimes wouldn't raise the eyebrows sex seems to raise now (uh, does anyone here think officers DON'T have sex!!!???) - and drinking and carousing would also be viewed differently. What mattered was, does the leader WIn and is he or she competent in battle? Looking at Philip, who seemed to have enjoyed the respect and friendship of HIS followers, I'd say its fair to say HE drank and caroused a LOT. Anyway, just my 2 cents
