callisthenes tale...

Post by sinhakumara »

Scholars..! Aristotle's nephew Callisthenes was accompanying Alexander's expedition as the official historian. we know how the poor guy lost his life in Persia....but is there any documentation of his 'account of the expedition' till his personal tragedy...? sinhakumara.

Fragments of his work exist in the extant works of others Plutarch's Life has a few and Polybios' diatribe in Book XII spring to mind I'll list them when I get back to my books.

The fragments of Kallisthenes are to be found here (only ‘The Deeds of Alexander)

14a) Strabo XVII 1, 43
14b) Plut Alex 27
28) Strabo XIII 1, 13
29) Strabo XIII 4, 8
30) Strabo XIV 1, 7
31) Schol T Eust. Hom Il N29
32) Strabo XIV 4, 1
33) Strabo XIII 4, 6
Schol Apoll Rhod. I 211: F39
34) Photius, Suidas :Sardanapalus
35) Polybios XII 17-22
36) Plut Alex 33
37) ditto
38) Strabo XI 14, 13

The initial number is the number assigned by Jacoby in FGH.
When you think about, it free-choice is the only possible option.
