Bell men again

In February 2014 i posted here about the bell men in Macedonia for the first time.

In the link above you will find their new parade that happened in Thessaloniki these days. They reenact the ancient custom of dancing and dressing in honor of god Dionysus. There is the element of men being cross-dressing as women as well as the ancient wedding rite.

Very interesting and beautiful photos. As for the name, I remember a quote in Plutarch,( Life of Alexander, 2,7): he says that in Macedon the women who perform Dionysiac rites are called 'Mimallones' and 'Klodones'. Perhaps the last name survives, so to say, in the modern one, I think.

Thank you very much for the comment. However I don;t think that the word "Klodones" exists in Greek, at least not modern. If that is not the case then its simply a word I don't know of. The word "Κλήδονας" is the closest one to this topic and it has to do with fortunetelling via water.
