Re: Everyday stuff in Alexander's world
Alexander read a lot.He asked Eumenis (as he probably was the one in charge for these things)to bring him books.Plutarch tells us that Hiliad might have been nothing more than just an amusement to him.Maning that the influence that this book had on him was not that great as people believed. But anywa...

Re: Influence of Aristotle on Alexander
First of all ,Alexander was not a replica of Aristotle or of anyone else.So of course he had his own ideas about some things. We do not know exactly what were his initial thoughts about the non greek populations. But we know that Alexander thought that with proper education (greek education) they coul...

Furthermore, you talk about myths and mythology. If we are to talk about mythology then things get complicated. For example the greek mythology and the translators of it (Diodorus the Sicelian e.t.c) account many interesting facts about the era before 2000 bc but shall we take them as history,or seriou...

Ok,lets see... The indo-european theory as you said is a subject of controversion. It might be true to a point and it might be not.Like all other theories. There are not enough evidence to backup this theory. The common aspects of culture, language e.t.c of some civilizations does not indicate that they...

Re: Just Back From Greece!!!
Kennyx this is a big problem of modern greece. At least as far as the state is concerned many things are done wrong about this matter. And this total abandonment of the greek herritage is somewhat suspicious. There are a lot of things to be excavated and /or to be shown to the public but they are not. ...

Re: professional flattery
I do not think so,at least for the case of Alexander and Philip.Alexander had many people flattering him but they were obviously doing it bythemselves in order to gain the King's favor. And Philip i think would probably be disgusted by these kind of people because mainly he was a raw and hardened sol...

Kohyar: there is one thing that i must comment on what you have written. It took 6 months for Darius to create an army because his initial army was already crushed by Alexander at issus. This initial army was well prepared. The persian Kings before Darius the 3rd must have been preparing it when they s...

Re: About Greek Ancestry
Actually little is known about the true origin of he greeks. There were many tribes, some being in the greek territory many thousand of years ago and some that alledgedly descented from other places. At some point a man from India (cannot remember his name now) came up with the hindo-european theory w...

Re: Alexandrias so Called Drinking.Cassander Propoganda
Philip's drinking problem was well known. And it is described in the sources too.So we cannot say that the King's court tried to hide his problem from the people, because he was the King. The same thing applies to Alexander too.If Alexander had a drinking problem it would probably be well known to ever...

Re: Andrew Nad The khan
Well,a very large part of Khan's conquers was uninhabitted (did i spell this correctly?I mean without population). To be more precise a large area that had nothing of interest, maybe only small tribes.A very large part of Asia was like this, with deserts, steppes and mountains and some tribes along. Thi...

Re: The Persepolis incident
As for Persepolis again, maybe it was a combination of feelings. When Alexander was heading to Persepolis he saw the mutilated greeks and the sources tell us that he even cried before this image. This fact in addition with the exxagerated luxuries that he saw in Persepolis may have triggered the feeli...

Re: The Persepolis incident
Hail Kennyx So you are saying that there is a possibility that Alexander didnt actually burn the palace down? That would be interesting. The only source that doesnt reffer to this incident is Arrian, but all the others do.So i guess it couldnt only be a rumor. I'll have to insist in his love for Athens...

Re: The Persepolis incident
The burning of the palace days after Alexander entered Persepolis concurs in this theory.During a big feast in the palace a hetera from Athens set fire deliberately in front of everyone.I think this was set up probably by Alexander because he did not react. He did not do anything to stop the fire.He ...

The Persepolis incident
Ok we have analysed at some extent Alexander's attitude against Thebes and Tyre.We know that Alexander had outbreaks of passion, anger e.t.c.(but who doesnt?) that sometimes were catastrophic.(Cleitus case) Now i am going to try to analyse why Alexander acted the way that he did regarding Persepolis....
