Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Hi Andrew, just added the data in my tools and from a first look I can replicate the results they have within an accuracy of 1-2 years they provide (i.e. most probable date for the death of the wood is 362 instead of 360 BC etc), so that is the correct calibration curve. Maybe the offset you see is ...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

The uncalibrated radiocarbon age is 2250 BP plus/minus 30 years. Whoever wants to make exact calculations instead of drawing lines by eye on the plot Andrew supplied, can use the latest calibration curve for the northern hemisphere for which the data is here: http://www.radiocarbon.org/IntCal13.htm ...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Lots of info here: http://www.protothema.gr/greece/article/561180/amfipoli-poioi-kai-pos-ithelan-na-thapsoun-ton-mega-alexandro-kai-giati-den-ta-kataferan/ Hopefully somebody else can find time to translate (at least the interesting parts). I may do that in parts later. The photos are also better qu...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Agesilaos, I think this plot includes tombs like Sveshtari (somehow connected to Lysimachus, if I am not mistaken) and others and the thracian kingdom was anyway partly integrated into the Macedonian one, especially during the time of Antigonos. Sveshtari may be influenced by the architecture or dec...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

It is wrong that it doesn’t matter if the excavation team promotes a false theory I was just saying it does not have any influence on whether their theory will be accepted or not - that may anyway happen only after a series of publications and other steps during which they will have to show the dat...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Some more info from the presentations: From Lefantzis: -The frieze with the soldier and the sculpture with the snake where found 100-120 meters west of the tumulus -One more piece attributed to the frieze was found in the Strymon blocks, showing a foot of a horse, which is why they think the frieze ...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

I agree Andrew, it is straightforward to refute that, but I dont think Lefantzis and other go around forums and the social media taking requests and answering them. Sometimes they may answer, but that is not something we should take for granted it should happen always. All justifications and discuss...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Well, I hope I at least know better Greek to understand what he means, but I think he is clear in his last sentence, saying practically, that even if you consider that one cannot write where the drafting was, you can still fit the Π. I don't think the 10-12 minutes of conference presentation by Lefa...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

One of the statements is here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGw17Ub2ASM where he says "...and it is obvious that it has been carved on the unprocessed (or unroughed?) part of the block, before the forming of the drafting and the rough surface of the block, and there was an attempt to erase it...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

More generally still, it does not seem actually to have been denied that the Πs have been cut off the end of the Paralebon-Hephaistion inscriptions. Actually it was denied, and it was specifically said that there is enough space for the Π to fit there. Archaeologists asked also during the Q&A s...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Here you can find some more images from the presentation about the geological studies at Kastas. http://www.xronometro.com/amfipolis-sirinis/ I find this image interesting - this is the same stuff Lazarides was reporting for his excavations of Kastas in the 1960s and 70s: pieces of marble everywhere...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Thanks Andrew. The person that did this study said they are in the process of analyzing more samples, they are not happy with having analyzed only one. They want to repeat a similar study as for the Amphipolis bridge (https://journals.uair.arizona.edu/index.php/radiocarbon/article/viewFile/3236/pdf)...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

I have yet to hear a transcript of the presentations where some arguments may have been explained, but regarding the square trace between the caryatids, here is a picture uploaded earlier: http://i.imgur.com/SbCbj8G.png I do not see this as a mark left by a statue base, e.g. due to weight - a patter...
