Re: Alexander's speed

We simply don't have enough information to judge whether it was in Alexander's character to lie. That's never really been a question in my head. Alexander and his father had both employed propaganda enough where I don't so much question that he could be dishonest... just that I don't see him seeing...

That would have been Paul's son, Leto II (or "B", since we're speaking of parallel Greeks). :)

Re: Alexander's speed

Resources, resources: it's what wars come down to. Throw in Alexander's demostable appetite for war and conquest and you have "the perfect storm". Frank Herbert indeed. Who then would be the Bene Gesserit of Alexander's day? Further, would that make Hephaestion Alexander's Duncan Idaho or...

Re: Alexander's speed

Hi again, Semiramis :) You raise very interesting points. Against them, I can only question what Alexander felt he could gain by misleading his soldiers about the distance to Ocean's shores. If he had an understanding of the geographical issues you brought up, he had to have known that his obfuscati...

Re: AtG statue at site of Gaugamela?

Thank you, I made it out of there no worse for wear. Unfortunately, the last few months have been kind of a whirlwind. I got to see quite a bit of Europe, but I've hardly had a chance to sit down and relax. Speaking of which, I have to go to the States for a training trip this very Sunday! Eumenes w...

Re: AtG statue at site of Gaugamela?

Where the sponsorship of the statue is concerned, I do feel that the ethnicity of the Iraqi minister in question might have played a role. Greece has quite often backed Kurdish causes in the past, officially or unofficially, and it might not be a coincidence that such a monument was suggested. Regar...

Re: Alexander's speed

I wonder, though, if he had an overall aim, if there ever was, for him, a ‘big picture’? Did he want to conquer the world? Did he just want to find the end of the world? Or was each objective, at the time, enough, so that he didn’t need to look too far ahead – it didn’t matter too much what the nex...

Re: Try my quiz

I am a would-be Ptolemy. Not much of a surprise there, I suppose. I could never imagine being an Alexander, but Ptolemy seems to have been the most sane and somewhat decent of the bunch who followed him. I promise, though, that I would not have been as interested in inflating my opposition's numbers...

Re: Kronia Polla, Alexandros!

I'm terrible at expressing myself. I did not state that all movies need to generate sympathy towards the main character. I stated that Stone's movie was obviously geared to have a sympathetic main character I caught that, hence my "quick add". :) It's obvious that you disagree with the en...

Re: Kronia Polla, Alexandros!

Semiramis, I did read your following statement, but I'm not sure how they reconcile with one another. Per your own words, your concern was whether the audience would remain sympathetic to Alexander. You went on to qualify that Stone's movie was geared toward a sympathetic character. I will admit I'm...

Re: Kronia Polla, Alexandros!

I'm not sure anyone has claimed that a movie's job is to make the audience feel sympathetic towards the protagonist. Well... But... do you think the audience would have any sympathy for the main character after this? His Alexander was obviously meant to be a sympathetic character. My point w...

I guess the question needs to be asked: is a movie's job to make you feel sympathetic toward the protagonist; or to entertain? I would argue that Oliver Stone offered his Alexander (as some have mentioned) without the worry of whether this character would entertain the North American audience that, ...

Yeah, I'll have to agree with that one. I liked the depiction of Gaugamela because it gave you an indication of the "hook to the guts" Alexander attempted. Hydaspes deserved that kind of attention to detail because here again Alexander shows his tactical cunning--a feint, followed by an at...

Re: Kronia Polla, Alexandros!

So, if you could have had just one more scene in, anything you liked, what would you choose? I think I'd ask for Troy. Fiona I can't pick... it'd have to be one of these three: 1. Egypt/the Oracle 2. The siege of Tyre (can you imagine the shots of the city's tall walls and the amazing siege works u...

Just in case I didn't, see PM. :) You had PM'd me your e-mail address back in December, but our servers failed to allow me to message you that way. Edit: I'm familiar with Ancient Warfare. I received their inaugural issue, left for Iraq, returned, and promptly left for Italy. One of my "gifts t...
