I have no problem believing that the person we called Jesus existed. That his existence was then elaborated on and changed to that of a supernatural being with all the then current religious ideas floating around the East at the time. And that Paul created Chrisitanity as we know it out of his own f...

Never heard of Walter Pater till I read this. I as I am old enough to have gotten through college with a typewriter (did the internet exist in the late 80's?) I can honestly say that my opinion on Alexander (or any historical figure) was not formed by the internet. Yes, there is a lot of erronous in...

Seems to me that in a film that is about Alexander himself and not his "accomplishments", leaving the sexuality out would have been silly (the Burton film, Hephaistion did not even exist for all intents and purposes). edited: I do recall reading about a TV series pilot prior to Star Trek i...

I thought it was pretty "funny" when Eumenes was being a tight wad about lending ATG money on the Indus and then his tent was set alit , revealing his 1000 talents.

Phillip had the wit, and while Alexander may have as well, it just doesn't come through in the histories as well.

When I was in high school I was lucky enough to take a lot of specia classesl, including Ancient History. This was in the California State School System, which then was one of the best on the country. Even there, in the electives ancient history went like this, basically: "Alexander the Great d...

I agree Marcus..it never even opened in the Southern U.S...they knew it was a lost cause there.

And while it did tank in the US, UK, and other English speaking countries, it was the top grossing film of the year in others.

I am pretty darn sure Alexander had sex with whomever he pleased. There is enough in the old sources to say so, and obviously enough of them said so or took it for granted that it wasn't considered worth commenting on. Now I didn't say he was bi-sexual...a modern term. How much of the histories, eit...

Thank you! I think I was mixing fiction in with the sources. This helps me very much. I have got to get Strabo I can see.

Monkeys in India

 At the risk of making a fool of myself, did I imagine that one of the ancient sources mentioned that the Macedonians didn't realise what the monkeys were until Hephaistion pointed out that they were animals? I can't find it and it is driving me nuts. Have I mixed fiction with "history&qu...

I don't know why some people are upset about a film going through a number of "cuts". How many directors would love the opportunity to remake a film? Perhaps Stone will set a precedent. It would like asking an academic to never update their work, even though information and views may chang...

Raw is a polite word for it. Those Attic pottery vases must give you the straight up willies, Jasonxx.

Though I agree with the idea that there is no absolute history.

As for the film, I am looking forward to it very much. Want to see how much Stone has changed it

jasonxx...google images of the Alexander Sarcophagus. There is at least one dog depicted in the beautiful carvings on the side. The hunting scene side. It's beneath a horse of one of the central characters. It doesn't look very wolf-like though, reminds me of a cross between a greyhound and a huntin...
