Arrian, Pluttarch..I got them mixed up..though who supposedly cites the "apologist", Aristobulus? My comp on another floor from where my books and writing are (love my pencil!). The last month of Alexander's life was so politcally charged with major kiester covering that I don't take any o...

Wow........ how can I get invited to a party like that? Karen    Yeah, it gives the term "living large" an extra twist. I think it might be one of the things that differentiate the Macedonians from their more southern cousins. In Jeanne Reames-Zimmerman's disserta...

Amyntoros posted some great bits from Athenaeus. Here is one more. It is from a couple of generations after ATG and a wedding feast not a regular symposium, but it has some interesting tidbits, like food and drink (hot and strong...mulled wine? What could be stronger than undiluted Macedonian wine?)...

Re: Alexander and Sparta

Does anyone know if there's a well established explanation on why Alexander didn't move against Sparta when the later refused to join his campaign ? If not, i look forward to hearing every probable explanation. What Dean said. Also, I think that by "ignoring" Sparta, he let them know they...

Something else that has kind if niggled at me about the whole Beas incident. Wasn't Hephaistion off elsewhere with some of the army quelling a revolt, or building an administration (depending on how you want to view Hephaistion). How much of the army was with Hephaistion as Alexander set off for the...

Paralus...I have no doubt that there was resentment (again filtered trhough later writers eyes). Arrian is handy when you want to paint a certain picutre, but he is not to be trusted when he talks about Alexander's drinking? Lastly, ironically, what was the mutiny at Opis about? They were being kick...

About those repudiated marriages. We know of only a handful of the officers by name. Perdiccus, Eumenes, Nearchus, Craterus, Seleucus, Ptolemy. Perhaps the nearly all divorces are just of the ones the narrator felt were important to the history of the Diodachi struggles. I have my own doubts about N...

Wow. My hat's off to you. I have two with autism spectrum disorders, does that count as four normal ones? ;) Oh, my hats off to you Karen. Why all this research -- are you writing a book or something? Are your flow charts electronic, and if so would you be willing to share them privately? Sadly the...

Yes, I'm a veteran of the teenage tornado...I married a man with 6 kids. I survived intact, just barely. I don't know about Kallisthenes..it is so murky, like everything that happened in that region. I'd give my eye teeth for a papyrus that chronicles the years from 330 to 326. What a mish mas...

But I can't help but wonder where Hermolaos, a teenager raised in the Makedonian tradition that kings had divine ancestry, got all these principled notions, with their southern Greek tinge, if not from Kallisthenes. Also, if Kallisthenes was innocent and the nobility agreed with his views, how was ...

If someone was to make a realistic movie about the battle of Gaugamela there be wails from the audiance...a screen full of dust! :P I enjoy reading historians as they try to explain exactly what happened there. No two accounts match each other. The mysterious events on the Macedonian's left wing and...

Well, Paralus, off the top of my head, didn't Philip have a mutiny on his hands in the mid 350's? And possibly at the beginning of his reign, as well after the death of his brother in a battle which he lost (going from memory here). I really like Philip, he's much more "likable" than Alexn...

Not sure that this really has anything to do with anything, but rereading the posts I was struck by the different kinds of "entertainment" Greeks vs. Romans. Explicitly the gladiatorial combat versus athletic and artisitc (theatre and music, etc.) competitions even that blood-thirsty cur :...

I think a great sequel to "300" could be called "The Peace of Antalcidas". One of my favourite little bits of Alexnader's history is when he sent the 300 suits of armour to Athens with this little staement: "Alexander son of Philip and the Hellenes, except the Spartans , set...

Paralus, very well said. I'd also like to add that Themosticles and his navy also gave the "300" a chance to hold out so herocially. I have never understood why the Thespians are ignored, as they stayed willingly. This film has been a chance, once more to give my incurious son a little les...
