Snake/Leucos island (Greek: Λευκός, "White Island") - translation
Below is my translation of information about Leucos/Snake/White Island from a few Russian sources. Please remember, though I put my comments throughout the translation, I translated the texts as is, without checking the sources. It came to me as a surprise that Aristotle mentioned Snake Island too. ...

Snake/Leucos island (Greek: Λευκός, "White Island")
Are you familiar with the story of Snake Island in the Black Sea, where, according some legends, the remains of Achilles and Patroclus were brought to by Thetis, to be put in a sanctuary? This island is not to be confused with Leucos Island in the Ionian sea where, according to different set of lege...

Re: Pella mosaic
What?! Are you saying Alexander needed a divine helper to kill a deer?

Re: Pella mosaic
I voted for Alexander being a figure to the right, one with a sword. If those two are indeed Alexander and Hephaistion (some other names were suggested), my argument for Alexander to the right is because he is holding a deer by its horn. As a king (or a prince) he had the right to the first kill.

Re: Treasury of Atreus
Thank you, Paralus. I dont know much about Pyrrhos, just the most common facts but i think that after alexander's conquests there was more to plunder. Anyway, it is frustrating when people who are considered knowledgible in specific areas dont bother to point out their sources (i mean E. French). I ...

Re: Treasury of Atreus
Alexias, do you know from where the information is coming that Alexander allowed his troops to plunder the Macedonian royal tombs?

Re: Visiting Vergina
Hello Sandros, I visited all 3 places last May so everything is pretty fresh in my mind. The palace wasn't open to the public but I could see it from the road. I only managed to see the tombs which are magnificent and worthwhile a visit. Not sure what you meant by Vergina Museum, it is a part of the...

Re: Timing of Alexander’s plans for Arabian campaign
I'm not so certain he was departing in June. The fleet was exercising and the the new phalanx formations were being formed and, one suspects, drilled. Meanwhile Alexander was binging and 'partying'. The reason would be that he was awaiting the "army from Macedon" which Antipatros was to b...

Re: Timing of Alexander’s plans for Arabian campaign
Even along the Gulf - it is extremely hot during the summer months. I do realize I am asking to speculate, because no detailed plans of the intended expedition survived (am I right?). I tried to figure out what was known about Arabia at the time. This is where this very recent website came handy - h...

Timing of Alexander’s plans for Arabian campaign
As we know Alexander died in the beginning of June when the army was about to embark on the Arabian campaign. Had he not died, June 10th (or plus a few days) might have been remembered as the day when Alexander and the army left Babylon for yet another successful enterprise. I was always puzzled by ...

Re: Visits to Alexandrian Places
I hope Delos won't mind me passing this link on, but following her recent trip to Greece she has posted lots of excellent photos of various Alexander places and other sites here https://www.facebook.com/Modern-Geography-of-Ancient-Greece-1053201881417395/ . I obviously not only don't mind but even ...
