Re: Luhrmann movie a go!
Hi Everyone,I think it is great that someone else is willing to try doing another Alexander movie after all the bad press Stone's film received. I dare say Stone's film will make its money back on DVds ets, but it seems unlikely that it will be a huge money-spinner, which presumably makes an Alexand...

"Alexander, Killer of Men"
Hi,This post is mainly for Marcus. I just wanted to say that I followed his advice about a good book to read on warfare and bought a copy of "Alexander, Killer of Men". I haven't got very far yet, only bought it today, but it seems well-written. Actually, I picked it up second-hand - we ha...

Re: Movie-for fun
Hi everyone,I like all the scenes mentioned so far. My personal favourite is the taming of Bucephalus, it just felt so real! I also really liked the entrance into Babylon, probably because it made me think that Alexander must have been so happy on that day.Cheers,Kate

Re: New Compueter Game?
Hi Kenny,I know zilch about computer games, but my fourteen year old son, Alexander, is an addict. He agrees with Chris that the Stone movie based game is poor, but ROME Total War is his current favourite and he says it is brilliant, especially if you enjoy strategy and tactics. Don't know if that h...

Re: Macedonian clothing - some trivia about
Hi Yiannis,Thanks for the post. I like finding out about the everyday details of Alexander's world, it makes it easier to understand. In fact, if anyone here on Pothos knows of a good book on daily life in ATG's time I'd love to read it. I've read "Fishcakes and Courtesans" for example, bu...

Re: beard
Hi,There was some discussion on Pothos quite a while ago about whether or not Alexander might have decided to be clean-shaven because his father Philip and all the older men at court had beards - as Marcus suggests it might have been a trend-setting thing with Alexander's circle all adopting the new...

Anyone know how was Alexander embalmed?
Hi everyone,I've just finished reading "The Lost Tomb of ATG", which I really enjoyed - although I'm not so sure that I am convinced by Andrew's theory that Alexander ended up as St Mark :-) But the book did set me to wondering how Alexander's body was actually embalmed. I remember reading...

Re: Alexander Cool as a Cucumber akin to Marcus
Hi kenny,I think Alexander's confidence came from knowing he was a great general who had won many times in the face of adversity and from knowing that he had laid intelligent plans which ought to work - unless luck was against him. Luck, of course, is the key factor - wasn't it Napoleon who used to ...

Re: In The Footsteps of Alexander by Michael Woods
Hi Janet,Glad to hear that you liked Michael Wood's series. I've been a fan of his for about twenty years since he first did a series of "In search of ..." programmes for the BBC. The early ones on historical figures such as Eric Bloodaxe were done on the cheap, but Wood's enthusiasm for h...

Re: I wonder Can we admit that Alexander was as good an orga
Hi, I like your friend's summing up of Alexander, Tre, -very pithy! - but I don't agree with his conclusion that we wouldn't like Alexander. Probably we would find it harder to be understand him than people of his own time, but I think he must have had a special kind of charisma which over-rode his ...

Anyone read this?
Hi,Has anyone here read this book - Ancient Warfare: A Very Short Introduction by Harry Sidebottom? It was reviewed in the Guardian newspaper over the weekend. The review said - "Harry Sidebottom fairly presumes you wouldn't know a hoplite if one thrust a spear at you, and that you grasped legi...
