Re: Oriental literary sources
As Agesilaos said, finding ANE (Ancient Near Eastern) documents on Alexander can be tricky. There are, however, a couple, and we do have an Assyriologist who's been involved in the study of ATG's chronology. Tom Boiy, "Cuneiform Tablets and Aramaic Ostraca: Between the Low and High Chronologies...

Re: Hephaestion the Athenian
Ah, yes, I tend to forget about academia.edu, despite having my own stuff up there. 8} There are copyright problems, but given how increasingly difficult it is for libraries to afford journals, it makes it a little easier for those conducting research. That said, most of the articles are more recent...

Re: "Hephaistion Philalexandros" back up
Thanks, Alexias. I've lived with the guy(academically speaking) for going on 25 years. Ha. To be honest, these days, my research interests are more in the direction of Alexander and Macedonian religion, esp. Dionysic cult in Macedon.

Re: Hephaestion the Athenian
Agesilaos -- Thanks. Part of the problem is simple lack of time to do much online stuff beyond job-specific. Uni service has eaten my life. Right now, I'm not teaching this summer as my (90-year-old) father is staying with me, but I'm finishing up an article (on ATG and the destruction of the Branch...

Re: Why is Cleitus called Black?
Kleitos Melas = dark, not black. This, btw, also affects Alexander's horse, Boukephalas, who is also called "melas." Given that brown is nature's most popular horse color (like black is for cats and dogs), and in conjunction with the Pompeii Mosaic, it's more likely that Boukephalas was a ...

"Hephaistion Philalexandros" back up
Mostly for general reference, my educational website on Hephaistion is back up, and the bibliography is updated to include several more recent articles, particularly by Sabine Muller.

Re: Hephaestion the Athenian
The fuller discussion of why Athens can be found in Heckel's article, "Hephaistion, the Athenian," ZPE 87 (1991): 39-41. The association is based on an inscription, not just linguistic associations, and yes, a few other things such as Demosthenes's appeal to Hephaistion, but this is one of...
