There might be something to this leaving a beautiful corpse business. I wonder why Alexander wanted to look like a youth even in his 30s. I'm sure his shaving resulted in a few eunuch jokes in Persia. :) The romantic side of me likes to think Hephaistion's death was a factor here. What do you guys ...

All this sounds terribly thrilling. I'm not one to greatly hope for amazing archaeological finds, but I just can't help myself! I wonder what they will find?

I know this is about Alexander's appearence, but since we're talking about this,I'll continue. Darius certainly wasn't the worst person in history. In fact, he was quite remarkable, if you see it from a Persian's aspect. As Semiramis said, he did do quite a few remarkable feats during his lifetime. ...

Despite Alexander the Great's desire to continue conquering, I believe that he must have known that he wouldn’t have lived very long. Then again, what great conqueror would want to live until they are old and unable to fight. Alexander loved glory, and would despise life if he could no longer achiev...

Didn't daddy Phillip take the kingdom from a child too young to rule? What happened to Darius' young son, the one Alexander saw in the Persian harem? It seems that if you're too young to rule, you're too young to keep your position and perhaps your life. I can't help to think though, could anyone -...

I agree that it was incredibly despicable what Cassander did to Roxane and Alexander IV (even though Roxane allegedly poisoned Stateira and her unborn son). I can't help to think though, could anyone - even Alexander - rule such a vast and multicultural kingdom? I recall a historian (I can't remembe...

I'm glad you went by that site, it's really interesting. I have to say that I really thought Darius was a coward because he never stayed to face Alexander and just ran away. Alexander was braver and had more integrity even at such a young age. That mosaic captured that with Alexander's expression a...

I know I'm probably sounding hackeneyed, but congratulations on your new book! I look forward to reading it. It sounds extremely interesting, and I'm always up for trying a new persspectuve in the world of Alexander (especailly Memnon's). Once again, congratulations!

I really didn't like how the Ancient Greeks treated the Macedonians either, but we must admit, there's a little hipocrisy in all of us. I suppose the Ancient Greeks saw themselves as more "refined" in a sense. Early Macedonian history is filled with a lot of killing and barbarity to get to...

I certainly plan to read more of Mary Renault later. Fire From Heaven really did it for me, and is probably my favorite of the trilogy. Yet once again, if you think about it, Alexander did seem at least a bit unreachable. He's the one who was grave most of the time, and I really wanted to get inside...

Re: Roxana

I hope I can do her justice in my HF novel "Shadow of the Lion." She's certainly one of those most interesting characters to write and develop. There isn't a lot known about her, most is speculation I suppose, but her spirit and temperament were noted and she was compared to Alexander's m...

Thanks, I knew it was made after his death, but couldn't off the top of my head think of the year. I had to run and look in one of my books and it had some information on it. It says "Roman copy from Pompeii of an original Greek painting by Philoxenus." There is a site that has a p...

I never really thought of Alexander as the removed and completely unreachable one, but I suppose you're right. Everyone around him has so much personality, yet Alexander's is so hard to find. He did many things, but we can never really get close to the man himself. I enjoy your insight.

It seems that Hephaestion was kind of a god in Alexander's eyes. He needed someone to rely on, to comfort him, and to always be there for him, and Hephaestion did all that. No one else could have replaced Hephaestion. Maybe he did deserve such a spectacular funeral. I mean, the majority of people kn...
