Re: Alexander the Great quotes
chatGPT says the quote is from Richard Bach (of Jonathan Livington Seagull fame), from his book "A Bridge Across Forever".

Re: Discussion on Chaeronea
I agree that Hammond is wrong: the position of the tumuli has nothing to do with where the battle lines where. That's my opinion. I have no proof either way. I take issue with putting words into his mouth: Hammond did NOT claim that it was universally true. But I concede that it was Ma who muddied t...

Re: Discussion on Chaeronea
Let's for the moment accept Hammond's rationale for the Macedonian and Greek lines and apply it to the archaelogy of Marathon. Here we've two tumuli: that of the Plataians and that of the Athenians. These are 3.2km apart. Applying Hammond's rationale, the Athenians thus held the right wing and the ...

Re: Excavations in Alexandria
I've had another look at the 3D link that gped provided and I don't think the top of the object in his hand has been broken off. Nor does the base of it look as if it has been broken off as both ends appear smooth. There is an indentation in the base and a hole in the top, so if the hole was meant ...

Re: Excavations in Alexandria
That's definitely no spear. A xyston, of cornel wood (if we take Arrian at his word), would be far too heavy to wield at that diameter. All depictions have the shafts far thinner; hence their shattering. It is no sarissa either. Some photos of a sarrisa wielding guard and longche bearing symposium ...

greek blacksmith who produces ancient armour
for those travelling to Athens and are interested in ancient armour, produced the ancient way. the replicas of Philip's armour (from Vergina) and Alexander's linothorax (reimagined from a variety of historical sources) look amazing. https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/greek-blacksmith-ancient-armo...

Re: Discussion on Chaeronea
...The multiple head wounds on three of the hoplites’ skulls The nature of the wounds on the Theban dead provides some evidence in this debate. The sharp force trauma wounds on the skulls from Chaironeia are consistently on the top of the head. The angle of all but one of the injuries suggests the ...

Re: Excavations in Alexandria
thank you for a brilliant summary. does anyone here know the diameter of the cornelwood shaft of the lances / spears / xystons used in Alexander's army? I went to see the statue last year, but I was somehow not convinced it is Alexander (he looks too young and I don't know of any other portrait wher...

Re: Discussion on Chaeronea
Chris, I can't place your unpaved road on Google maps. The road that cuts straight across the mouth of the valley appears to be paved across the river and railway (as far as the images go). At the river, I can't make out if there is a dam, weir, or floodgates near or under the bridge, but flooding ...

Re: Discussion on Chaeronea
Paralus, how lovely to see you here again! The Greeks intended a defensive battle. To that end they far more likely plugged the valley at its western end. Here the Greek line is in blue and the Macedonian in Red (the MAcedonian burial mound is the red spot). Escape routes over the Kerata pass are sh...

Re: Discussion on Chaeronea
It would be good if you could share this on the academia post, and the photo of the site. I wouldn't know how to do that - and I'm not an academic so I'd feel a bit out of place there. but AIUI, this forum is public, so a link to the thread here should make it accessible. maybe we'll even get a few...

Re: An alleged head of Hephaestion
Thank you for your question In the case of the the Kasta monument ,various sculptures have been found during the excavation (PDF "The sculpures of the Kastas tumulus "'.A.Corso , Academia ) The professor A.Corso identified them because of the technique and because of the type of marble ,a...

Re: An alleged head of Hephaestion
Thanks for this. I thought I had seen that image before but couldn't remember where from. I think the paper is right to be a bit cautious about the Amphipolis tomb. That we have not had a publication giving the full results of the excavation after 8 years is troubling as we still not had any defini...
