Re: The Golden Mean by Annabel Lyon

I just finished reading this novel about Aristotle and Alexander in his youthful years. This author received many accolades and good reviews for this book including the Rogers' Trust Fictional Prize. On the jacket are naturally praises from authors who endorse the book. Without spoiling this story f...

The Golden Mean by Annabel Lyon

I have found the book written by Annabel Lyon called The Golden Mean. Her novel about Aristotle and Alexander the Great was published in 2009. I just learned that it was available so that I checked it out at the local library. I am near the end of it. She writes in first person as Aristotle which so...

I enjoyed browsing through the first book that I examined very quickly. I love the format, and the ease in availability. Thanks so much, Jan

Re: Alexander the cross-dresser?

I am very impressed with this article that you have produced here. It is very illuminating to me. I have to admit that there is much more to it than simply the issue of why Alexander chose to dress on occasion in a garb which would signify Artemis. I am impressed with the discussion of his learning ...

Sacred Band of Thebes

Do any of the sources give a description of the Sacred Band of Thebes as they appeared at the Battle of Charonea? Do any of the sources tell of their means of defense? Thanks in advance.

Re: Alexander's Horoscope, poss. ancient evidence found?

I love horoscopes....they are so meaningless, but some few have some merit. Frankly, the idea that each person at birth is governed by the time of day or night and the stars and planets is too incredulous for me to believe. But there is no doubt that the ancients to modern day have believed and been...

Memnon by Scott Oden

I just found Scott Oden's book on Memnon which is probably 5 years since originally published. As Scott states in his historical notes, little is known about Memnon. As the saying goes, a man is known by his enemies as well as his friends. Scott has created a very formidable character in his version...

Re: NEWLY PUBLISHED NOVEL ON ALEXANDER & HEPHAISTION

Hi, happy that you responded to my comments. I reacted to your warning that if we didn't like something as though you were threatening. I just finished reading Scott's Memnon which is an excellent fictional study of one of Alexander's adversaries. I know how difficult it is to find all the necessary...

Re: Alexander's Discretion & Hephaistion

Thank you, Alexias, for providing the information about megalexandros.livejournal and about where to obtain a copy of Jeanne-Reames Zimmerman's dissertation. I sincerely appreciate that. I have acquired a sense of humility about this business of Alexander as I began to write my own draft of a potent...

To Scott, I have not yet read your novel about General Memnon but hope to obtain it to read. Thanks for all the tips about publishing that you gave in your post.

Re: NEWLY PUBLISHED NOVEL ON ALEXANDER & HEPHAISTION

I admit that out of the box is not my interest area. Fantasy, wishes, and silly spirits do not attract my attention. Scott was too nice. Copying Harry Potter, Twilight, and other silly stuff is not creative thinking or writing. Threatening readers about homophobia is likewise ill advised. Pandering ...

Re: Child Prodigy, nucleus of novel

Thank you, Derek, for your suggestions, Marcus, and others. Years ago I was involved with a correspondence school called the Institute of Children's Literature in which I wrote and worked with some published authors so that enabled me to understand the process of writing, marketing, and publishing. ...

Thanks, Ruthaki, for all the information about your book, and your website and facebook page. That is very helpful and I am very interested. I am so happy for you to have finally reached a point where you believe you can publish your work. Your workshop sounds utterly enjoyable. I will be visiting y...

Re: Child Prodigy, nucleus of novel

Thank you for the great advice, Scott and Derek. I do appreciate it. I just finished watching the Oliver Stone debacle of a film. It is a joke in my opinion and an insult. But what can you do except hope for better. I have not read the Mary Renault books on Alexander. I read one which I found prepos...
