Re: Artabazus, Parmenion, & Barsine...The Perfect Persian Pl
Greetings Alexias, Unlike Marcus, I don't believe I have had the pleasure of meeting you. Thank you for your well researched reply. I would very much agree with Marcus’ position here. Parmenion did not ‘gift’ Barsine to Alexander. She was captured at Damascus along with the main Persian baggage trai...

Re: Artabazus, Parmenion, & Barsine...The Perfect Persian Pl
But I don't imagine that Parmenion had much choice in the matter - it's not as if he would have been able to pick and choose which of the captive women he would send. If he hadn't, and Alexander discovered that he had kept her away (and there is no doubt that he would have discovered), well ... Wha...

Re: Artabazus, Parmenion, & Barsine...The Perfect Persian Pl
Greetings Marcus, Many of your points are valid but try not to overlook the possibilities in favor of accepted dogma. There is little historical evidence for any of my suppositions. The theory relies upon timeline and the most likely scenario produced from political & familial connections. I'd d...

Artabazus, Parmenion, & Barsine...The Perfect Persian Plant
Per recorded history, Barsine was given to Alexander as a gift, schooled in Greek, and was likely acquainted with Alexander from his childhood. She was probably a very strong woman. This seems likely enough, having outlived two extremely capable Greek commanders for husbands. That fact alone, would ...

Re: RANKS and names of Macedonian soldiers
Greetings Ruthaki, I haven't checked into pothos for some time so I thought I'd drop in and see what's happening. One of the best books for military ranks would have to be Arrian. Beyond that, and what Marcus has already mentioned, I would also pillage "The Marshalls of Alexander's Empire"...

Re: Alexander and the desert
The desert marches have alway fascinated me. This guy was indomitable. He just refused to give up and refused to let his army perish (of course, Mahkran is a different story). I love the bit where Alexander is marching towards Bactria and is so tortured by thirst that his eyes are bulging and his to...

Re: What made Alexander the great so great? HELP!
I suppose that Alexander was Alexander the Great for a variety of reasons. Perhaps first and foremost was his tactical range. But you can't take any one thing out of context and call it great. He was a package deal. His tactics would have been useless without the vision to make it happen.

Wonder why Green didn't record it?
Hello Amyntoros, As always, your posts are timely and informative, so thank you 8) . It seems that Green relied so much on Curtius at times it felt like I was reading Curtius (from what little I could tell from what I have read of Curtius). I've always avoided Curtius because of the negative bias pu...

A question concerning Gaugamela
Hello fine Pothosians, Just came across this web page while doing an exploratory re-write of a set piece (I swear some day I'll stop). http://www.lbdb.com/TMDisplayBattle.cfm?BID=94&WID=46 There is an interesting tidbit concerning the Lycas passage. "and Darius taking to flight, the whole a...

I'm Inclined to Agree
Greetings (my dearest Aussie brotha from anotha motha),
I still haven't found a woman that can satisfy the way a good read can. Did you ever get yourself buried in Carl Sagan's 'Cosmos'? (Admit it, you thought I was leading to something else...didn't ya?!)

Some similarities to Alexander
Hello Kenny, I guess you are correct of course. Jelousy, envy, and hatred for an empire. Kind of pathetic that we'd cow toe to those base instincts. After sleeping on it, I found the similarities to Alexander's internationalism striking. Though the comic book Superman has been international and even...

A SuperHero Tangent Topic
Greetings All, I just returned home after watching the "Superman Returns" film. The critics complained that superman was 'wimpy' and not very super. I can remember the same complaints concerning our great hero 'Alexander' after the Alexander film came out. To cut it short the critics are d...

A Question Concerning ATG's End...
Greetings All,
Anyone Care to Guess which River Alexander headed to in attempt to Drown Himself before being stopped by Roxane??? Yeah, again, I'm aware that the veracity of this story is extremely suspect.

Black Crows and Black Doves Confusion
...On the other hand as religious as he was, he didn't have any problem adopting other culture's religions as we see in Egypt- (those black doves were crows weren't they?near Siwah)-anyway, as Napoleon said, Hello Dean, No, the legend about the black doves was before Alexander's time, something lik...

Re: Why not a combination of two?
The Greeks had been visiting the oracle at Siwah long before Alexander's visit - and of course the Egyptians had consulted it for even longer. Best regards, Amyntoros Greetings Amyntoros, I don't know what kind of scholarly research has been conducted on the Siwa shrine, but an interesting book I r...
