Re: Dividing the Spoils: The War for Alexander the Great's Empire"

Hi, Just finished this book a couple of days back. Was certainly not disappointed. The books delves into the wars following Alexander's death. After reading the book I found on the last pages, a list of personae dramatis which would have helped with so many similiar names throughout the book. I coul...

Re: Demosthenes by Ian Worthington and buddies

Hello, Yes, this is mentioned in the chapter dedicated to Demosthenes and his *in*activity during the reign of Alexander the great by Ian Worthington. Demosthenes sends his friend Aristion to stay with Hephaestion. During the 330 to 324 period, Athenians and Greeks as a whole came to enjoy a period ...

Re: Demosthenes by Ian Worthington and buddies

Hi, Yes, there is a chapter regarding his (in)activity during the reign of Alexander and I found it quite interesting. I'll just gloss over a few details. When news was received that Alexander had been killed in Ilyria and Thebes revolted, Initially Demosthenes had shown support but later fortunatel...

Philip II of Macedonia Ian Worthington

Hi, Just finished reading an excellent tome regarding Philip II. First off, this guy has really done some research and put some serious thought into the book. Getting the book came as a total surprise as I was just perusing a second hand book store and came across it in immaculate condition- hardbac...

Re: Diogenes and a misnomer

Hey there! Thanks for the reply. Yeah I can see where you are coming with this although the reply "I would wish to be Diogenes" to my mind, kind of implies more than just having an attitude that he admires. Anyways, as you say the whole incident is doubtful, it was likely to be in 336 when...

Diogenes and a misnomer

Hi, Been quite a while due to work but now surprise surprise I have quite a bit of time on my hands. Missing a lot of the other users that I used to see regularly here guess you know who you are. Anyways to the point. Finished a book which had nothing to do with Alexander- well pretty much nothing. ...

Re: Hunting and archery

Hi, interesting question. I can't remember reading about Alexander's personal use of archery. The archers from Crete were used by the army or so Arrian tells us,seemingly alongside the Agrianians. Most references to archery in Arrian are alongside the mention of the Agrianians. In Sogdiana, we read ...

Re: Hephaestion

Hi, This thread reminds me of the moment Sisygambis awkwardly mistakes Hephaestion for Alexander and Alexander tells her not to worry that he too is Alexander almost as if he is saying that Hephaestion is figuratively speaking an alter ego of kinds. Wasn't really quite sure how to interpret this phr...

Re: Fire from Heaven

Hi, Yes Hephaestion comes across as Alexander's number one fan but little depth is given. Today I finished reading the book and was amazed to find how little I had remembered of how it ended, other than Renault's wonderful "way with words" in the closing paragraph. Whether conscious or not...

Re: Fire from Heaven

Hi, Couldn't resist looking a little for the detail about "earth and water" and in a way it is linked to Alexander or at least his ancestors as Persian emissaries according to Herodotus visited Amyntas I of Macedon and demanded these two things as a sign of vassalage. And in book 7 of Hero...

Fire from Heaven

First the book is a wonderful novel written by someone who certainly can write. Just about 50 pages in and already picked up on several similarities between...

Re: A terrible loss - Agesilaos; Karl

Hi, I don't get chance to look on the boards as often as I would like but nevertheless see them from time to time and was very sad to read about Karl's passing away. One thing that I was first most impressed by with Karl was his academic knowledge and also his posts were SO WELL WRITTEN. (many of wh...

Re: GRBS article

Thanks Taphoi for the clarification on the source material. :) I had understood things completely the wrong way round- by thinking that Ptolemy if anything would have wanted, as a tribute to his wife, give her lasting fame as histories greatest "firebug" of all time! It seems moreoever tha...

Re: GRBS article

Hi, I think that the article raises an interesting issue- certainly bearing in mind the torching would be seen as a culmination of the panhellenic crusade and retribution for Xerxes burning a temple in Athens. Curtius more than touches on the episode. He certainly dedicates a few paragraphs to Thais...
