Re: Horseback riding in the Hellenistic Era

Thank all of you for replying! :D

So it's pretty safe to say, then, that they weren't exactly large animals, and not dwarflike either, but somewhere in between?
The height at the withers of a horse from that period might then have been somewhere between ca 140 – 150 cm...

Re: Horseback riding in the Hellenistic Era

Thanks Agesilaos and Alexias

much obliged! :-)

But wait a minute, Alexander's cavalry didn't ride small horses now, did they? You mentioned something about their size being almost that of a pony?!
Have a hard time believing that...

Re: Horseback riding in the Hellenistic Era

1. But the riders during Alexander's area, including himself, did use both bridles and bits, right?

2. How come they didn't use stirrups? Was it because they hadn't been invented yet? Didn't the Chinese use stirrups during the same period?

Re: Alexander's helmets

Hi Marcus Thank you for replying. I read it and it sounds wonderful. I guess the helmet was fitted with feathers and plumes or plumes at the very least.. but it kinda makes you wonder... I know the greeks wore very elaborate and theatrical helmets, and as I suspect Alexander had a flair for beautifu...

Re: Alexander's helmets

thank you Susa

Would be cool to see one of the helmets... there probably were a lot of ornate and lavish features to the helmets... didn't he have white plumes on his helmet at Issus?

Alexander's helmets

Hi everyone! Btw, merry christmas to all of you! I've always wondered as to the helmets worn by Alexander in battle... does anyone know which types he wore in his various set piece battles? Do you guys think it was ornate and exquisitely handcrafted with artistic embellishments and feathers, plumes,...

Re: Did Alexander dislike ugly people??!!

I know the thread's nonsense... I never claimed otherwise. Just wanted to straighten the matter out. If it appalls you that much, there's no reason to reply to it, is there? The mediumship post, well, I understand where you're coming from, just wanted to share with you guys, that's all. No malice in...

Alexander revisited via medium?

Hi guys!

Have you heard that a famous american medium, Stephen Hermann, a couple of years ago, made contact with the spirit of Alexander the Great? He was interviewed by a macedonian guy named Alexander Donski... very odd, indeed...

Re: Did Alexander dislike ugly people??!!

Well, Whoever spoke those words is clearly of a very judgmental persuasion.. Just because someone famous spoke it, doesn't mean it's an absolute truth. You can pretty much find faults with everyone... even the most revered people in history.. Alex was a product of his time, formed by the prevailing ...

Re: Did Alexander dislike ugly people??!!

Hi Chris! Thank you for setting the record straight; on both Green and the "dislike ugly" rubbish. You're right, when one thinks about it, it hardly seems like Alex had any aversion towards the less beautifully inclined, when taking your points into account! As for the rose-tinted lenses s...

Re: Did Alexander dislike ugly people??!!

Dear Agesilaos.. You are an absolute angel, too... Thank you for helping me dispel the nonsense which Green wrote about Alexander disliking ugly people... absolute nonsense... Alexander, I bet, dealt with hundreds of people everyday, and I bet their looks varied.. they were probably not all Tom Crui...
