Re: Philip II past.
Hello,Talking about that battle,In a book that I was reading recently the author talked about the idea that Demosthenes was motivated more by Persian money than by Patriotic reasons and that that is one of the reasons why he fled the battlefield of Chaeronea.Did Philip give Alexander a really great ...

Re: The real name of Alexander
Hello,
Just out of coincidence, I was re-reading the footnotes of Mary Renault's book "Fire From Heaven" last night, where she says, as Marcus pointed out already, his name was Alexandros. Although we have been left in the west with his latinized name Alexander,
Best regards,
Dean.

Re: Philip II past.
Hi Marcus, I seemed for some reason to be under the impression that Philip had been inspired to develop the phalanx because of his experience in Thebes where perhaps it was an important part of the military structure/design.I wonder though where the original idea of the sarissa was born. Just recent...

Yes Marcus,
I suppose in retrospect the term "Pyrrhic victory" is slightly out, time wise as in Alexander's day the term was yet to be born,
Yes, let's call it a Cadmean victory,
Regards,
Dean.

Re: Philip II past.
Hello, I had my suspicions about the truth of Philip's matricide- it really is incredible- in the glossary at the back of Gisbert Haeffs book, there are listed the main characters of the book and there are dates, names and events that supposedly are 100% factual.I find it unbelievable that authors/no...

Re: New discoveries? Poros defeating Alexander?
Hello, This debate has been around quite a while and thoroughly talked about here if memory serves me rightly. I think that what we decided in the end was that Alexander and his men faced a terrible enemy and fought elephants which no Greek army had ever faced before but in spite of the horrors of t...

Philip II past.
Hello, First off, just to say that I am very pleased to see this site open for business again! Second, I have been reading "Alexander" by Gisbert Haeffs. It is fiction but based supposedly on "fact"(whatever that means) Anyway, in the book he talks about Philip's parents-Amyntas ...

Hi, Hannibal was knocking on Rome's door along with his elephants- during the second Punic war and gave them quite a fright.
It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if he hadn't been called back to Carthage.
Dean.

Re: What if?
Hi, yes I had heard the same story about his battle in Graniccus. I suppose that if he had lost at any of his major engagements then the maybe the Persian could have tried to hit Greece. I mean it was unbelievably weak- Alex subjugated it in less than a year... By the way I like the metaphor- about ...

Re: Fiction books
Hi Dave, any book- whether fiction or non-fiction can be potentially wrong. The major problem we have getting closer to understanding the history of the Macedonian is that the sources are often conflicting and give different reports of the same event. I understand that you probably mean that given t...

Gaza.
Hello, thought I'd ask my buddies on the forum about a detail regarding Alexander in Gaza. I read that after Gaza had been taken, Alexander had the male population decimated to the man. I mean that seems extreme and totally OTT for ATG- what could have provoked such a drastic, radical and cruel act? ...
