Re: Alexander the Great statuette

That is a zone or zona, which also means girdle and it denotes rank. Alexander took the symbolism from the Achaemenids along with the diadem, tiara(upright) etc. The Successors continued the fashion and it was then passed on to Rome. Thank you! I remember that now, it was buried too deep when I ask...

Re: Alexander the Great statuette

Off topic, but what is the "ribbon" tied high on the waist called and what is the purpose of it? Thanks. :)

Re: New Movie - Young Alexander The Great

Well Paralus, a young Macedonian girl in a white leather mini dress loosely laced up the side might be enjoyable. http://www.ilyasalkindcompany.com/alexander_fullfeature.html You can view a trailer and a few photos, including the one mentioned above. A film about Alexander's young years could have b...

Re: New Movie - Young Alexander The Great

I don't think this is a new film at all...it's the same film that came out (or something, it's very confusing) some 5 or 6 years ago. The one I've seen referred jokingly to as "Alexander 90210".... Interesting that it is being repackaged, though. And not mentioning that it is an older film...

Re: Alexander the fox hunter

Ha! My first thought was of Robin Lane Fox and his love of the fox hunt. This is surely something RLF would have pointed out years ago if it was in any source. :P Certainly foxes were hunted or trapped (the fur alone must have been nice in the winter and they would perhaps have been viewed as pests ...

Re: Alexander's languages

And then there's the Macedonian "Brygoi" who changed their name to "Phryges" or something like that... :D Herodotus. Histories, 7.73. http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Hdt.+7.73 As the Macedonians say, these Phrygians were called Briges as long as they dwelt in Europe,...

Re: Alexander's languages

And yet, Mandarin Chinese is a northern Chinese dialect as Cantonese is a southern one. It depends on who you ask. Some call them languages within a super Chinese language family. It is a source of controversy. :) I could just as easily say that English is a western Germanic dialect as Swedish is a...

Re: Alexander's languages

Mandarin and Cantonese as being mutually unintelligible; I met a Chinese lady the other day who insisted that Cantonese should not be referred to as a language but as a dialect. I do think that politics or nationalism can be seen in the insistence that Mandarin and Cantonese are the same language. ...

Re: Alexander's languages

Sigh.... I don't think we will ever know exactly what language Alexander spoke, beyond the Attic Greek and the Macedonian language, whatever it was. I know I have mentioned elsewhere recently, but ALexander spent several months in Illyria when he was a teenager...how did he communicate then? And his...

:D Yes, he was. I was trying for some snarky comment about Robocop vs. Inspector Clouseau, but not feeling all that witty, stopped myself. Weller is also apparently a lecturer at Syracuse University, and was a graduate student in some kind of history from UCLA. Who knew? When I first saw him hosting...

Peter Weller..not Peter Sellers...though a "documentary" narrated by Peter Sellers would possibly be quite amusing.

Re: Upcoming Oxford Exhibit - Items from Aigai

Well Henry was rooted in 16th century English culture. He was 16th century English culture. Your point might have more merit if an exhibit of Henry's family tree attempted to prove that the entire family was rooted in ancient English culture... The Tudors were Welsh. One could say they had been Ang...

Re: Upcoming Oxford Exhibit - Items from Aigai

No worries, I see your point, I just happen to have a different perspective. If all the artifacts and "evidence" show, at least on a balance of a reasonable assessment, that their "thesis" is correct, well isn't it all right to present it that way? Isn't that the basis of a scie...

Re: Royal flags and emblems

You might want to check the reverse of Ptolemy's own coins in Egypt.

Aside form the famous Alexander with the elephant scalp, one recurring theme (followed by later Ptolemys) was the eagle standing on/clutching a thunderbolt.
