Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

The image of a Nike on a ship is not restricted to Samothrace of course and is not a feature appearing only in hellenistic times. If you download the thesis linked few posts back you can see earlier depictions of that scene, e.g. like this one on an amphora from Capua in Italy, dated to about 330 BC...

A thesis in Greek but with many nice relevant ship images in the end is here: http://ikee.lib.auth.gr/record/128802/f ... 2-8293.pdf

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Since there were some discussions about the fireze, there is also this from twitter: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Ce5aX10XIAEJqRx.jpg:large Which does not disagree with what the archaeologists say - i.e. the winged creature in the part of the frieze appears to be sitting on a boat. The coin is from D...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Andrew and Agesilaos I think you reach different conclusions since you use a different approach for "calibration". From what I understand, Andrew takes the 2 sigma calibration curves and looks for the intersection of those curves with the 70 BC uncalibrated radiocarbon age. Agesilaos takes...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

From the 2015 presentation of the same person who presented the analysis of the burial chamber's charcoal, it is actually stated that the burn layer sampled comes from the lowest parts of the west wall, and towards the north end of the chamber. The region sampled is below: http://i.imgur.com/PPWSMWS...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Here are some details regarding analysis of the burn layers in the fill of the burial chamber. Not sure if the date given is the uncalibrated one or not. If it is the uncalibrated radiocarbon age, then the calendar date and 1-sigma error for the sample is 24 BC +/- 34 yrs (based on the tool Agesilao...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

The note that Pauline refers to writes: "It was previously accepted that the riders, at least at the time of Alexander's campaigns, did not carry a shield (see. Snodgrass 1967, 120; Hatzopoulos, 2001, 51). This view is no longer valid, including the theory that the metal greaves belonged to the...

Some members of pothos know the volume "The macedonian tombs of Fiikas and Aghios Athanassios 2005': In this volume there is not the detailed presentation of the weapons of the dead warrior . For the full presentation of the the weapons you may look Academia.Μ. Τσιμπίδου-Αυλωνίτη .Νάματα. Αγιο...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

What Andrew may mean by "reconstruction" is (I only assume) interpretation. There is no interpretation yet of what the whole frieze represents, but only some brainstorming about what individual features may be. The idea that sphinxes appear on the frieze has been at least stated once by K....

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Not really sure what I see in that composition, except for the kopis, maybe a helmet and in other parts a soldier on a horse. The rest is two confusing, on the right of the "tower" I even think I see this: http://chrisdrury.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/thinker-rodin-statue.jpg Here ...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

I think the "round twr falling" is a kopis, like that from a sarcophagus in Tragilos heroon, few km north of Amphipolis: http://i.imgur.com/IeNGfcp.png or like the one in wall paintings of the cist tomb of Macedonian tomb 3, few hundred meters south of Kastas: https://enneaodoi.files.wordp...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

...from a first look I can replicate the results they have within an accuracy of 1-2 years they provide (i.e. most probable date for the death of the wood is 362 instead of 360 BC etc) Have you put in the 1-year correction for the fact that the BC-AD scale has no year zero? Thus the year 360BC is t...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Not something from the excavators, but few noteworthy observations by amateurs: 1) By the user edmondo on Twitter, noticing the 6 bosses on the Kastas tomb Macedonian door, a unique feature, at least for the doors that have been found. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CIQrXTJWoAIoPfH.jpg:large 2) The sec...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Thanks Andrew - I need to hear what they say when they present the slides, what is written on the slides is never enough. People who keep writing on the slides exactly what they say are gradually disappearing :) I think there are still big problems besides the non-unique solution the calibrated data...
