Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
Accepting that you have studied some of the archaeological reports and that they concentrated on inhumation burials from the archaic period, it is nonetheless far from clear that cremation fragments would not actually be expected in the soil beneath the Kasta Mound. The reports that I have read (e....

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
Was there ever any evidence to support the coffin idea? I know bronze and iron nails were present, as were decorative elements. But anything to suggest a coffin in particular over, say, a kline? And I'm sure the initial suggestion made was that the decorative elements were from something above grou...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
The cemetery on Kastas was in use into the fifth century, so there will very probably have been cremation burials. If digging the cist grave disturbed a cremation burial, then a few fragments would have been mixed in with the grave fill. I have said nothing about cremated fragments being brought in...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
Let's recall that we do not actually have a cremation: we have only a few percent of a cremation in terms of the amount of material (where is the rest?); we have a cist grave with a slot stated by the archaeologists to have accommodated a coffin, of which we have fragmentary decorations, and sugges...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
You can get a somewhat higher resolution image of the frieze here: http://www.iefimerida.gr/sites/default/files/foto_1_1.jpg I cannot see what you are overdrawing at the area of the legs. Apart from the general outline, to me you make the legs look thicker than visible. Also, in the link above I can...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
...Crowning of bulls is the subject of coin illustrations already from 4th century BC as my friend has found, the "problem" is such coins are found exclusively in a Greek settlement at Campania in Italy. Still it may be interesting to see what is the origin of such iconography and whether...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
The 2nd century BC house in Amphipolis that has a wall decoration imitating the marble blocks in the Kastas chambers may have belonged to a priest or an important person associated with the cult activities there. The same house has also a second room, decorated with wall paintings of rectangular or ...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
Hi gepd. I agree with you that frequency is not a reason to exclude possibilities. It is indeed possible that the friezes in the tomb depict unprecedented themes or creatures. But it is not likely. It is improbable. Nearly all Hellenistic Greek art has a strong relationship with other examples in t...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
I am still undecided if we see centaurs or dancers (or both) and I don't think this will change until at least we see the UV filter images. I would certainly, however, not take into account the rarity of a depiction as an argument to exclude possible interpretations on what the frieze may show. Ther...

That's terrible news. I learned a lot reading his very informative posts - and enjoyed discussions with him the 2 years I write in this forum.

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
Disregard my earlier comment about the bull being in the center above the door. That was wrong. Sorry for the misleading comment. It appears they are also uncertain which of the two large pieces of the northern frieze were left or right. Opinion appears to have changed between September 2015 and Mar...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
Before Lefantzis showed any of his drawing, I was undecided on whether the figures on each side of the bulls where centaurs or dancers. This is one statuete found in the Hellenistic cemetery of Amphipolis, which could resemble what we see on the frieze, if not a centaur. https://lh3.googleuserconten...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
A side note about he bull on the frieze is that that this frieze component was the one above the door entering the burial chamber, the bull was in the center above the door, so one may consider that the bull represent (one of?) the heroized persons worshipped there. In various discussions I have rea...
