Alexander was first.

I have no idea what makes anyone caled Great as I have problems with. From my understanding, Alexander was the first to be called the Great (I've read that he was called the Invincible while he was alive). Look to Alexander and decide what may make him great and see if any of the others match up. I...

Have you ever watched 2001?

The scene with the chimps figuring out that if they hits someone over the head the one being hit would probably be knocked out or killed? Primatewise, it was then (though, perhaps, without a monolith to encourage it).

Re: Bucephalus

I'm new here and really enjoy reading all the posts. I have a question and hope that it is not a repeat of a previous one. I've read where Alexander's horse was killed at the Jhelum River in what is now Pakistan. The horse is supposed to be buried on a hill where the site of an old Hindu temple is....

The whole point being, of course,

that if Alexander ruled the whole world, there would be no reason for wars. He's the closest to come to that, so I can see him saying that!

You might want to read Jai Sen's "The Golden Vine" for an idea as to what such a world might have been like should he have lived to old age.

The Oath at Opis!

THE OATH "Now that the wars are coming to an end, I wish you to prosper in peace. May all mortals from now on live like one people in concord and for mutual advancement. Consider the world as your country, with laws common to all and where the best will govern irrespective of tribe. I do not d...

Greek religion with religious tolerance

The most famous 'deviation' was his support of Zeus-Ammon (Ammon being a Lybian) diety. He may or may not have liked the Zoroastrans (who still don't like him) and the Brahmans in India fought against him, which may have led him to support the Buddhist portion of the Indian populations. Do a google ...

Alexander and Tyre: The sandbar that became a mole

Here's the link: http://www.inform.kz/showarticle.php?lang=eng&id=151602 Apparently the sandbar stretched from the island fortress to the mainland. Alexander exploited this in his building of the mole. It still doesn't change the achievement, but it makes the Tyrians look even more stupid, for t...

Re: Laws change all the time

The problem is that the USA has always tried to be a defensive nation, not an offensive or agressor nation. I agree with most of what you've written, but USA has always tried to be a defensive nation? Tell that to the native americans, Mexicans, Panamanians, Grenadans, Guatamalans, Nicaraguans, Cub...

Apparently he started his days with his religious duties.

I don't know how often this meant a big sacrifice, or if it meant pouring incense on a fire, dripping some wine out of a cup, etc.

Re: Checked all the historians, and

I will stick to my opinion and think better of Alexander than a childish pouting brat kid... I harboured no expectation of any other result hence the my rather long and well constructed argument. It sounds like we're getting to the point where the both of you should retire to your tents and pout/pl...

Also, and I know I am waundering here. If Parmenion was to be executed, why bother with the two letters? The line's always been that the first letter was a forged letter from Philotas which Pemenion was to read, with his reactions being looked for. The second was from Alexander, explaining the firs...

Even Alexander, Ghengis Khan or Caesar wouldnt have forced it. Kenny Oh, come now! :) Alexander would have found a way to turn the pass, it was one of his specialties. My guess is that he would have used his seige equipment to bombard the pass while his engineers cut steps (much as against the Thes...
