Re: Good sources for this paper.

And making a case that Alexander thought that the Persians had been involved in Philip's death, and that he was angry about that death, would be a lot of work ... I might be muddling up money paid to Demosthenes, but I thought somewhere there is mention of Pausanias allegedly having been paid some ...

Re: Good sources for this paper.

Also, Alexias, I think that your third point gives mkywel some good topics. A question like "what role models guided Alexander?" or "how did Alexander imitate Hercules?" might be specific enough to focus a paper around and give some keywords to look for in the indices of books an...

Re: Good sources for this paper.

Surely we can speculate a bit though and exercise the grey matter? We can't possibly know what was uppermost in Alexander's mind, but we can at least list the ingredients. Alexander's motives though will have changed over time: the motives of the young king crossing into Asia were definitely not th...

Re: Good sources for this paper.

Thank you Dr. Reames! I hope that some of those articles help mkywel get started. Sometimes volumes with Companion or Handbook in the title will have a chapter on "personality" "goals" or things like that, and that should also give an idea of the main theories and list more speci...

New Relief of Arrhidaeus from Egypt

The images are only available on Facebook (so in bad resolution), but it was found at Kom Ombo near Aswan and has an inscription mentioning him and the god Sobek. https://www.facebook.com/172009302844728/posts/1598814886830822?_fb_noscript=1 One thing which I notice in the texts from Idumaea and Bac...

Re: Good sources for this paper.

Hello and thanks for having me on the forum. I am writing a research paper on what motivated Alexander the Great. This is a difficult question to answer as it seems ignorant to assume motivation came from only one place. It seems he was driven by his father but there's also evidence that he was loo...

Re: Direction of the forum

Also, I have been very sad to see signs that some of the regulars on Pothos have faced health problems and deaths in the family (not to mention losing Karl!) I think that Roger Pearse and one or two other stalwarts of the 'ancient Internet' have some difficulties too. But I do not really have much e...

Re: Direction of the forum

There will be some things relevant to Alexander in my doctoral dissertation, but writing which I can include on my CV, and relationships with other people in Austria, are more important than forums and Internet friendships. I think that keeping a site like this on the open, searchable Internet is a ...

I am glad that that exhibit is still circulating! Seeing things full size with your eyes is much better than seeing a low-resolution image on a screen.

Re: Any info on Alexander's ring depicted in Oliver Stone's film

As I was moving posts about, I came across this. I ended up buying two of the rings used on the movie. The Colin Farrell one represents the ring that Hephaestion gave to Alexander on his wedding night, but is probably one of several used. The one used in closeups had the spirals (as on the other ri...

Re: Men behind Alexander- Parmenio

Der Neue Pauly cites Heckel, Berve, and "The Death of Parmenio" by Ernst Badian. So if you cite all three, you probably won't get any rude comments about not being familiar with the latest literature!

Re: "At least he makes it safe for travellers"

Also, I guess there is an Alexandrian connection! He dutifully marched into the Zagros and subdued various tribes of 'bandits' although not forever. That seems to have been one of the things that a king was expected to do, just like a Babylonian king was expected to rebuild some temples and record t...

Re: Men behind Alexander- Parmenio

You might also want to check Das Alexanderreich auf prosopographischer Grundlage by Berve which is the work which Waldemar Heckel's books start out from. There is a lot of modern writing on the negative picture of Parmenion in the sources, and whether the positive stories are 'more authentic' or jus...

"At least he makes it safe for travellers"

My man Xenophon has this to say about Cyrus the Younger ( Anabasis 1.9.13): in Cyrus' province it became possible for either Greek or barbarian, provided he were guilty of no wrongdoing, to travel fearlessly wherever he wished, carrying with him whatever it was to his interest to have. Now, that is ...

No, its an old problem in English, French, and German research stretching back before the First World War https://bookandsword.com/2017/09/02/sometimes-bittner-was-right/ I also talk about this idea and how it persisted after surviving weapons and good photos of the monuments were available in my Ph...
