Re: Hephaestion as Alexander
So, better to reign in hell than get your ass
kicked in heaven? Unlike Akhilleus, who
wouldn't have minded being the least helot on
earth rather than ruler of Elysium... :0)enjoy.... (& excuse - more red wine & anasthetic)wmp

Re: Alexander's Quiz - the fruit
While searching for a decent meat in red sauce recipe at the week end, I too found a cookbook that stated that Alexander must have loved vegetables as he found so many in his travels (citing onions in Egypt, haricot beans in India) and, having tried them out on his troops, found they were good &...

Re: Richard Stoneman Lecture
Hullo, Susan, Marcus - & anyone else who can make the Stoneman Lecture...The lecture will be in the ICS part of Senate House (the southerly block) on the 3rd floor, (Room 332, I think, but am not sure) but it will be well signposted.Like Marcus, I'm unlikely to get there much before the start of...

Marcus, Ruth - the mother of Neoptolemus's children was Andromache, widow of Hektor of Ilion/Troy. Neoptolemus also married Hermione, daughter of Helen & Menelaus, before he was killed by Orestes, son of Agamemnon & Klytemnestra, and their union was childless... Euripides' "Andromache&q...

Re: Re-enactment of a Sarissa Charge
Karl - you're right, sarissas (etc) are certainly the best mass weapon (until gunpowder - but that's another country...). My previous posting was purely about one-on-one confrontations. (The largest number of spearsmen I ever had to face as a swordsman was 40 & that was bad enough - so I can ima...

Re: Re-enactment of a Sarissa Charge
Dave, appropo your comment about the broom
handles - I used to use a six and a half foot
spear (leaf-bladed, ash haft, not weighted at the
butt & used one handed as the shield was in
other hand) and even something that short was
a pain when you were faced with a swordsman! enjoy....

Marcus, Ruth - today I was shuffling through the papers on my desk & came upon the programme for Euripides' Bacchai (National Theatre, earlier this year) & remembered why I kept it... There's an article by Colin Teevan (who translated the play) including the following statement:"Even Al...

Karl - you can count me in for the drink - but I'll
only argue if there are no sharp implements
around - I've no wish to end up like Kleitos (or
end up skewering some one in a London pub!)

Re: Celtic Dagger
Marcus - I had a look at my bookshelves (which are not terrible extensive, given I inhabit a crumbling 1840s villa & can't put too much weight on my second story floors!) and came up with this:"Those who drew the sword [a short broad-bladed Celtic sword] from Philip's side saw that its ivor...

Re: What price a 3rd Century BC marble head of Alexander?
Ruth - considering it is being sold by Rupert Wace, I'd imagine it is genuine . . . He is one of the best known international dealers based in London (Bond Street, rather than one of those strange little places near the British Museum). And if you have the provenance, it's legal. (Never mind the mor...

Hullo Dean:Tre's right - there are quite a lot of articles out there, but often slanted towards either medicine or ancient history. There's one, for example, that goes into Alexander's eye colour - whether the reports of him having different colour eyes was due to concussion / brain damage...What ge...
