Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

Yes it gets interesting. Also, the press release talked about a burial complex and the geo-survey may reveal if there other tombs. Taken from a comment on a greek blog, the wooden casket may indicate that the dead was not of Macedonian origin (Roxanne?) otherwise there would be a larnaca, but this i...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

Down at the big hole there was a small burial room of square shape. There was a wooden coffin, and there have been found iron and bronze nails, and bone (ivory?) and glass decorative elements. The remains were found inside and outside of the tomb (whatever this means) and they are going to be analyz...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

Some days ago i noted in a reply that i made in Dorothy's blog that a tomb or heroon for Alexander couldn't have been built amongst other unrelated and non royal burials. According to the findings of mr. Lazaridis Kasta mound contains burials of men, women and children from the archaic period. She r...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

It's more likely that this tomb is of Achilles and Patroklos than Olympias.

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

It was reported that the sand inside the tomb is sieved, therefore it was put there rather than being a result of the mound's soil filling the rooms. If that would be the case it wouldn't have been uniform as we see in the photos. It also reaches up to the height that the holes are in the walls, hen...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

Also, around 2012-2014 and when the dig at Kasta started getting publicity, mr Polymenakos made this 3D design based on the seismic tomography. http://www.koolnews.gr/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/lofos-kasta1-570.jpg The red square is where the entrance with the sphinxes is. The left 2 black arrows sh...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

I agree with Agesilaos here. There possibly was a smaller mound and Deinocrates included it in a larger one. Lazaridis dug from the top of mound Kasta and after he found the base of what is now believed to be the base of the lion he continued down to a depth of 13-14m and found archaic burials from ...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

Yes that's interesting. I'll try and locate more about this Macedonian tomb 3. After all i think it's Lazaridis who found it, but the difficulty here is that google search provides results mainly in relation with the recent find of the tomb of Amphipolis, so that's where google's advanced search wil...

This is the link: https://html1-f.scribdassets.com/3s5y1vdji81y103f/images/20-7128506753.jpg Page 47 for the note. "Πιν" is short for "πίνακας" which in this case is a photo like the one Andrew posted. The text of n86 says: A big portion of the mosaic floor of the room has been d...

Note 86 doesn't give any reference for the dating. Also, i cannot find any reference aside the one Amyntoros posted if this tomb is on Kasta mound or next to it.

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

According to the scan, the H1 and L1 areas are possible tomb locations, with L1 possibly being a ramp. The entrance to the current dig is southwest as seen in the image near L2. Mr Polymenakos says though that this scanning method doesn't go as deep and accurately. http://www.zougla.gr/image.ashx?fi...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

Here: City built upon Strymon and the broad Hellespont, grave of Edonian Phyllis, Amphipolis, yet there remain left to thee the traces of the temple of her of Aethopion and Brauron, and the water of the river so often fought around; but thee, once the high strife of the sons of Aegeus, we see like a...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

There is another more modern reference, i'll try and find it. Of course the Casta monument doesn't resemble a typical ancient Greek temple, but who knows.
