Re: Alexander and the Malay Annals

Susan - forgive my not replying before to your posting, but I've been busy with the backlog of work after leave, and I've only just got down this far in the forum - I've been looking at the SOAS library catalogue, and they appear a copy of the Malay Annals for loan (rather than reference) - it is &q...

Re: Greek Grooming

I cut my long hair after some one in my own line
grabbed it to prevent me fighting the person in
front of me so that he could take them on,
merely for the kudos... :)wmp

Re: Greek Grooming

john - I've just returned from Sparta - and there is a mosaic of Alkibiades in the Sparta museum, that depicts him as cleanshaven, with longish hair, and a decided twist to the head... I'm not certain what era the mosiac is, but shall check (you have to ask for the lights to be switched on in the mu...

Re: Comeback

Welcome back, Maciek!Glad you enjoy it - I too very much like the Mieza site (even in the pouring rain :) ).The first time I went to Vergina, the armour & quiver were there - but I know they'd gone last year (replaced by photographs, neither of which are the best reproductions in the world). I h...

Yiannis, last time I stood next to someone in a
battle line, he gave me a very expensive tooth
job with the butt of his spear... Next time, I'll be more wary, but I'll certainly join
you!yours,wmp

Re: Hi All !!!

The tombs enclosure has been finished for a while now - I was referring to the roads around the site - roads in the village of Vergina. There's one road south of the tombs (towards the palas site) which when I was there in May was a building site of crazy paving - Pavlos will have seen it more recen...

Re: Hi All !!!

Marcus is correct - the Michelin map (I've got it in my office) does mark Vergina, which is about 16 km south east of Veria (Verioa). The best maps are those by Road Editions (available pretty widely in Greece) - which have been prepared with the aid of the Army (apparently)... I was last in Vergina...

Re: Mieza Academy

I last went to Mieza in May 2002, so if you want any info on what the site looks like now, I can provide. It was an unenclosed site, but when I went there, they were working on what looked suspiciously like a fence & gates (albeit wooden - I guess they've got to use all those trees they've destr...

Re: ATG's visit to Jerusalem

I think this may come from the same tradition that recounts that the gold of Melchior, given to Jesus when the Three Kings of the Orient paid their homage to him, came from Alexander's treasure. There's a reference to this legend in Lane Fox's biog. but I've not located the source - any clues out th...

Re: and now for the books - please vote

Here's my two-pennyworth....i) to add - As Susan has already added Carney's "Women & Monarchy in Macedonia", I'd add "Alexander the Great & the Logistics of the Macedonian Army" by Donald W Engels. (Slim enough to take in a back pocket on holiday, although it may irritate...
