Re: The Life of Alexander the Great
Hello Karl,The truth is that there are major problems with any theory on the death of Alexander. I don't see any more relevance to what you suggest than a full blown conspiracy. You have not addressed the closeness timewise of Hep's death, nor the dubiousness of it.A conspiracy does not always imply...

Hello Marcus,No arguments there, Darius pulled the plug on his own operation, and his retreat signaled a general rout. Have you read anything on the "30 Years War"? I read this great book on it with the same title. It was a horrible event which changed the history on Europe forever. It all...

Re: The Life of Alexander the Great
Ruth, The reason Aristotle is under some suspicion is having to do with the Greek blood feuds. If you were to kill a member of a greek family, they would have to kill you...being bound by honor to this. Would Aristotle have considered it lowering himself to this end? He was the only one in Callisthe...

The Life of Alexander the Great
Hello, So often we get caught up in discussing the death of the great one, that we forget to pay attention to his life, and the lessons learned for all of us. To study his death, means to study his life, as so often he seemed on a fast track to an early death and a short life that it was destined al...

Re: Gaugamela
Hi Megan, Alexander used his phalanx as a holding force, and his cavalry became the striking hammers used to outmaneuvre and over-run his Persian host. After the victory, Alexander was considered to be the "Lord of Asia", and Darius was not taken as a serious threat anymore, though he stil...

Hello Ruthaki,
My question would be...could he have been the great man that he was without his mother, his father, and Aristotle. All of the afforementioned influenced him in ways we cannot know.

Re: Very worrying...
I just finished watching Baz Luhrmann's movie "Moulin Rouge"...and found it very entertaining...maybe he'll make his Alexander movie a colorful musical. I can just see Alexander singing to his Companions and dancing with Roxanne and Hephaistion...I think I'm going to puke!!!

Hello Nick, Unfortunately, I haven't read everything on your list. But I was pleasantly surprised to see that you added "The Nature of Alexander" to your list...and also that it was placed so high. This was the first book I read on Alexander, and if it weren't for this book, I can't say fo...

Re: The nationality of Alexander the Great
Actually, He was born in 356 b.c., and appears to have been half Macedonian and half Greek (Epirus) in ethnicity. He was Macedonian in nationality, and outside the "Greek world" he was seen as a Greek, as were all others on his campaigns. But really, with so much border movement and transp...

Dear George, Not sure about your direct question, but there is a reference to the Persian horses being substantially reduced in number after Alexander returned to Susa...due to theft. There is an interesting evolution of the horse saddling and bit equipment and the evolution of human society in gene...

A certain Greek guy told me in a conversation one day before we went on this trip to Greece that the word "Greek" was originally given to the Hellenes by the Romans as a derogatory term which meant "peasant slave"...he was irritated about it, and voiced his dissent towards the Ro...

Hi Marcus, I see you're in a good mood today :) Demosthenes was involved in the battle of Charonea, and remembered quite well how efficiently the Macedonians slaughtered the combined armies of Thebes and Athens. There was little doubt in his mind as to what was in store for Athens if the Macedonians...
