Re: Ancients Behaving Badly
Finally got around to checking out the show this weekend. I really liked it. To anyone on the fence about watching it, I'd recommend at least giving it a shot. First, the weak points as I saw them. They leaned quite heavily on the Alexander as a potential killer for Philip. I thought the case wasn't...

Re: Ancients Behaving Badly
Hi Andrew,
If Philotas got a fair trial, then we may as well refer to his torture as "enhanced interrogation". I think the crux of the problem is that some of the old-timers in the forum are having trouble coming to grips with the Newspeak you so liberally employ in your posts.

Happy New Year people! :) Nothing nearly as exciting happening over here unfortunately. I get to go to this next month though - "Oliver Stone’s 'Alexander': the Adaptation of History and Historical Adaptation A public lecture by Professor Arthur J. Pomeroy, "Oliver Stone’s Alexander: the A...

Re: New Movie - Young Alexander The Great
That's a shame. They should just get another actor and continue with the excellent work! ATB Hot off the press: The beautiful Andy Whitfield is to be replaced with another Adonis. Let's hope he is slightly less um.. Spartan... with his facial expressions than his predecessor. Not to say tha...

Re: New Movie - Young Alexander The Great
Ray Harryhousen's 'Jason and the Argonauts' and 'Clash of the Titans' are so much fun. I've only been introduced to them recently. The new 'Clash of the Titans' did not float my boat though.

Re: New Movie - Young Alexander The Great
I would hazard a guess that this Alexander 'mini-series' will have more in common with "Smallville" than with "Spartacus", at least in the areas of violence and nudity. Now, a Spartacus-style rendition of Alexander's career would be superb - I can picture the gore-laden Battle o...

You're talking to someone who is eagerly awaiting the Spartacus prequel season. It's a distinct possibility that I will enjoy this movie.Paralus wrote:Are you sure?

*phew* Now that Alexander and Hephaistion's staunch heterosexuality has been confirmed, I can relax and enjoy the movie.

Re: Alexander's languages
Hi Semiramis, The point is that it is odd regardless of what whether you hold that Macedonian is just another dialect of Greek or if not and that is the point. Firstly, it bears pointing out that your argument also lies in presupposing that they are not the same language at the outset and that cann...

Apologies for spelling your name wrong Catharine. I don't think I know the account of Phillip's horse, but I'm sure someone on the forum can find a source.

Re: Alexander's languages
Hi Nikas, I'm with Catherine on this one, although I don't find the passage odd. It only becomes odd if one presumes from the outset that Macedonian and Greek are only accents on the same language, in which case none of what Alexander says makes sense. To go through your points - Alexander hadn't be...

Re: Amyntas
Why do think he didn't do that? I mean, what do you think his motivation was in killing Amyntas? In the scenario you propose, Alexander would have had to put the stability of his kingdom (and later empire) before his own ego. Does he come across as the sort to do that? He killed Amyntas because of ...

Re: Alexander's languages
Hi Nikas, What's the evidence for Greek and Macedonian being different dialects? Has there been any scholarly suggestion of them being different languages? To use your example, I am not Australian, Texan or Irish but find it pretty easy to understand those accents. I can also have a pretty good go a...
