Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Settlements at Hill 133 were abandoned, why not the cemetery? a) Because the area was used for tombs in the Hellenistic period during which Hill 133 was also abandoned, so the abandonment of Hill 133 evidently did not cause the cemetery use to end; b) Because cemeteries tend to persist in cemetery ...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

What evidence is there to show that the cist grave was filled with earth, backfilled with the same earth, and then that was sealed over with the sand fill? Genuinely new to me, so absolutely fascinated to learn that there is evidence to show that. Below is the archaeologists' plan and section. Ther...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Assuming 'simultaneous' is in proximity rather than time (not sure how one could prove that to a reasonable degree), double inhumation and cremation burials in cist graves are uncommon but found in places like Thesprotian Epirus during the Hellenistic period. These aren't monumental tombs however. ...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Hi gepd, Thanks for a very informative and detailed reply, but I fear that my doubts are not much assuaged. We now appear to be agreeing that it is difficult to establish precedents for simultaneous inhumations and cremations in the same grave. That is my point. The cist grave in the Amphipolis Tomb...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Hi gepd, Accepting that you have studied some of the archaeological reports and that they concentrated on inhumation burials from the archaic period, it is nonetheless far from clear that cremation fragments would not actually be expected in the soil beneath the Kasta Mound. The reports that I have ...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

The possibility that unrelated bones ended up in the chambers fill is always there, but apart from that I am not sure how you calculate probabilities, attributing the cremated bones found to external transport as an equally likely or more likely event. For a start, lets recall that at the supposed ...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

The thing is that the other elements in that part are also pointing towards some form of portrayal of Dionysos or Dionysian ritual. Centaurs make the link just as clearly as if the figures are a satyr and a maenad, and one gets to the same conclusion if they are dancers too. The question for me is ...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

A famous example of a female centaur in Greek art is in the painting of Zeuxis 'The centaur's family'. This excellent Greek painter (second half of the V century B.C.), who decorated the palace of Pella in Archelaos' times (413-399 B.C.), represented a female centaur feeding her twins (Lucian, Zeux...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

So earliest examples of beardless or female centaurs. Could have knocked me down with a feather. Not saying Amphipolis is or is not, just seeking reasonable context in which to place a bull and two figures next to it. Two centaurs centauring. Obviously a male one on the right, less sure on the left...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

I cannot see what you are overdrawing at the area of the legs. Apart from the general outline, to me you make the legs look thicker than visible. Also, in the link above I can see that at the bottom we very likely have no sandals or footwear. I am not saying I see a centaur, just highlighting that ...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

I see this for the male dancer to the left of the bull. There is a hint of a diagonal strap across his chest too. In general his reconstruction is less certain than for the bull or the woman, but there are indications of his feet. I cannot see how he could possibly be a centaur. Best wishes, Andrew ...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

...Crowning of bulls is the subject of coin illustrations already from 4th century BC as my friend has found, the "problem" is such coins are found exclusively in a Greek settlement at Campania in Italy. Still it may be interesting to see what is the origin of such iconography and whether...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

I am not saying there are zero parallels, but some of those findings are still extremely rare, and even more rare is their combination. Same is for Kastas - combining sphinx sculptures, lions, peribolos, mosaics, caryatids etc. is an unlikely combination, nobody could have predicted on the basis of...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

I am still undecided if we see centaurs or dancers (or both) and I don't think this will change until at least we see the UV filter images. I would certainly, however, not take into account the rarity of a depiction as an argument to exclude possible interpretations on what the frieze may show. The...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

...Where you're drawing the left side of the garland (as we view it) is actually fairly clearly a continuation down from the bull's neck and makes its right shoulder and chest. That's why your garland there looks like its going through the bull's neck. edit: just to say again, if there is a ...
